Giving dwarves numbers according to the migrant group they came with (1=starting group) is kinda useful.

What is better for pickaxes, steel or copper?
So I found a really neat place for embarking, but the problem is, that it`s on an island. Will goblins reach me?

Oh and how do you remove aquifers?
I would hope not.
Well it's all going to hell, tantrum spiral. Going to free all the wild animals that are in the cages and deploy the army, at least it will end in a bloodbath.

Material doesn't effect mining speed. In combat, steel obviously.
I think I may need to utilize The Pit on my own dwarves, I need to increase my fps.

No one will reach you. Not even dwarves.

Migrants probably will.
They can get to you anywhere.
Anywhere.
Yeah. My island fortress had migrants.
the dwarves are travelling
truly a horrid sight.

Indeed... two high master potash makers are behind you right now!
is it possible to make a bridge retract the second someone walks on it?
if you time it right with pressure plates, sort of.
I have a problem, I've embarked upon a terrible awful place full of zombie elephants, I managed to get a wall up, enclosing a portion of the river that runs through the map, and designated it as a water source, but my fuckhead dwarves refuse to drink from it, and instead like to run outside the fortress to drink from other portions of the river either above or below my fortress. Ideas?

did you set the water source on the water or next to it? you have to set it next to the water.
[editline]8th April 2011[/editline]
And why are you making them drink water instead of booze

Well I guess that's that for the fortress.

Also got to remove this graphic set as soon as I start a new fortress, they look better but I get tired of them a lot faster than the ASCII.
Tilesets bug me because it's not entirely graphical. There's still ASCII involved.
im getting spammed by cancel harvest plant could not find path but i havent set any plants to gather and is happpening ot every dwarf

Because i'm a terrible person also I don't have any barrels for to make booze.
Now i have a goddamn WELL. with a watersource ALL around it, and they are still drinking from the fucking river outside the fort.
[editline]8th April 2011[/editline]
Wait, scratch that, the well is in the process of being built, we'll see if my dwarves stop being completley RETARDED after its done.

You could just use stone pots you know.

Still need help with this.
Still need help with this.
remove the [AQUIFER] tag from every soil/stone that has it.
[editline]
[/editline]
You'll need to gen a new world, too.
Should I change the clay floors in my fort to paved roads? I've got enough stone, and there's shit growing in the hallways
[editline]8th April 2011[/editline]
I don't like this, there's a dwarf with a mood just standing there between some hematite ore. I think he can't get his stuff.
Do you have the workshop he needs?
and yes. paved roads are better, but trees growing in an entrance can make a good defence.

You can use Dwarf Therapist for that.
Oh right. I sent Sponge to empty the quiver of another elite marksgoblin, here's the video.

Jump to 0:40 to see him soaking up the bolts. He blocked every single one with his dual wield shields.
Then I sent my marksdwarves and they shot at them safely after Sponge did his job.
Once the goblins and trolls in my pit has died, I am going to place some upright spear traps there. Make it really dangerous to fall in. Stuff fall two z-levels, so they break bones at the very least, but I still want spears. So my questions are these: Once built they are in a default up position, right? And should I use iron, or would wooden training spears still be very dangerous?

Falling on spear traps doesn't do anything. Spears in a pit are just for looks, unless you hook them up to a repeater so they strike constantly and finish off any goblins who fell but didn't instantly die.

I had a big pit in one of my shared forts in 40d, it had upright spikes at the bottom, goblins got impaled on them.
If Sponge doesn't yet have a massive quarters and lavish tomb prepared for him, he should, because he's awesome.
Also, thanks to the lazy newb pack and CaptianDuck's feature-length tutorial, I've started my first fort since 0.28.181.40d! Irrigating for farming isn't that bad, and the military screen is about as confusing as I expected.
The only problem is that I've forgotten how to play, and what a fort needs to survive, so Daselgeshud, "Heavensfortresses", is probably the most inappropriate name possible.
