You don't have to irrigate for farming if farming on soil
I had a big pit in one of my shared forts in 40d, it had upright spikes at the bottom, goblins got impaled on them.
Really? Must have changed from 40d then. Has anyone tried this in 2010?
Yeah, I thought I read somewhere that having upright spears at least one z-level down means being stabbed pretty badly when falling.
I'll just use iron, since I got plenty of it. And I'll be able to make a buttload of spears by the time all the goblins and trolls die. Tough little fuckers. Though, they do have a lot of corpses to eat and troll blood to drink down there.
Do you guys make "danger rooms" with training spears? I personally think its cheating on the same level of save scumming.

Not in my current fort. I found out how lame they were in my last one.
oh god my best fighter has gotten a mood this will not end well
i disarm goblins and wild animals and use them to train against once half my recruits got their faces kicked in my elephants
[editline]8th April 2011[/editline]
also is it possible to move captives without cages and without them breaking free?

are there any tutorials for how burrows work?
My first siege arrived.
They didn't last long against my weapon-trap filled hallway.
Now I have to sift through the enormous amount of mess to try and find something good.
Just got my first ambush. Six goblins. My barely trained military of all hammerdwarves took them out, with one casualty: A peasant that got surprised.

60+ goblin sieges is where the fun is at.

You never played raptor mod for 40d, did you? 30-raptor ambushes in your first year. One raptor could easily take out ten dwarves.

Nope.
I fought orcs made of iron several times the size of megabeasts that felt no pain and could not be stunned or toppled or frightened.

I personally found fleshy swarms always more entertaining than unbeatable monsters
Although the cleanup is hell
Bah, my first successful fort, the one that just beat that ambush, may just fall. This single dwarf wont stop bitching. Hated the draft, pushed them out of the military. They have a fine bedroom, completely engraved, and a personal statue garden, with a single gold statue, masterfully engraved.
Is this how a tantrum spiral starts?
yeah, usually if one of the original 7 dies it can start a bad spiral
But tantrum spirals VERY RARELY actually ruin forts, most people just choose to abandon instead of rebuilding. I like the rebuilding phase.
Wooh, fixed that guys unhappiness, and got my first artifact. Ungegostar, an Iron Shortsword. Now, what to do with it...
Give it to your best swordsman, duh

Use the legendary weaponsmith to forge expensive, high quality weapons.
I dont have a swordsman, only hammerdwarves, out of my laziness.
By the way, Orkel, I should thank you. You're the one who introduced me to Dwarf Fortress by making one of these threads.
so i have told my arrow swamp dwarf to pickup lots of good equipment but he is still wearing leather armor and shows no sign of picking up the steel and iron i designated him to?

Don't recall making any of these threads, it's always been Thorny :psyduck:
I was doing really well until I got more then 30 dwarves
I had to keep giving everyone shit to do or they'd throw tandrums, most of everyone after a bit were just useless haulers and meatshields for my military.
Couldn't even flood my base right to kill them all :smith:

I hate migrants if you end up making wealth too much.
You never end up finding the right job for them so in the end they sit about complaining and hogging food and not giving a shit and throwing a tantrum and killing everyone and your settlement has crumbled to its end.
So I found a fort inhabited by nothing but critters

This pretty much sums it up
How do you select multiple things to undump in the k view?

Such is life as a dwarf
Get hit by a dead rabbit and die.
How do I remove traffic areas? I can't remove them using the designations interface.

just enable EVRYTHING on them, so they can fulfill any task neccesary.

Wait since when were Rhesus Macaque dwarves

I always give them stone detailing, masonry, furnace operator, and metalcrafter.
Not only does this result in you never having to worry about a non-active smelting order, but it also gives you access to an army of Dwarves ready to rapidly build anything, from a wall surrounding the fort made of stone, or a megastructure made of steel (I'd choose metalcrafter since it's rarely used, and thus wouldn't affect the more important industries.)
