Well, the PSP did "badly" because nobody bought games and just pirated them instead
Sony needs to share in some of the blame for that though - custom firmware users were banned from accessing the playstation store and even after releasing the Go they kept their PSN prices higher than retail UMDs. (Which made no sense because Go users HAD to either pay Sony's inflated PSN prices or just pirate games)
Why did they even abandon UMDs in the first place?

I wouldn't say that they were inflated, it's just that they kept the original prices the same way they were originally released. I remember buying Tekken 6 for $40 in 2011. A game released in 2009. No price decrease whatsoever. Completely ridiculous. They did the same thing with Peace Walker too.
It's only worth buying PS1 games from there.
Why did they even abandon UMDs in the first place?
the real question is why they ever thought that they were a good idea
the umd motor was one of the reasons original PSPs had such terrible battery life
Why did they even abandon UMDs in the first place?
I remember reading that they thought that they could be successful with the digital marketplace like Apple. It turned out to be the exact opposite. It was because of the lack of price drops, a very small amount of deals, and a very small amount of games being added to the PSP PSN each week.

with custom firmware you can play PS1 games that you convert to EBOOTs yourself, I never saw it necessary to rebuy my games and the PS store didn't have all the ones I wanted anyway
gran turismo 2 was great on the PSP, why they never officially released it was beyond me

They never released the Tony Hawk games on the North American PSN for some reason. I would've bought the shit of those. Eh, since I'm already getting a vita anyway I'm going to activate CFW for my old PSP.

You don't need to really activate anything anymore, you can run it on any PSP with pretty much any firmware version

with this one you need to run something each time you start up the system but there's absolutely no chance of bricking and can still keep OFW for accessing the PSN
Hand-helds just arent that popular anymore.
Hand-helds just arent that popular anymore.
Yes and no. The DS did incredibly well because of the casual market. Well unfortunately for hand-helds the casual market has long since moved to phones.
The gamer demographic is still strong and willing to buy into handhelds though. Unfortunately, interest in hand-helds does seem to be pretty low right now.
so how much does one cost?
but... but... I made a Ps Vita thread...
:(

I'm sick of my hunk of junk psp (it's a 2000 model, and it's literally falling apart.) Hopefully by the time I decide to buy this it'll have custom firmware.
broke ma automerge.
I tried the Vita today.
The first thing I had played today is Uncharted. Loving it.
I had a feeling that the rear touchpad will be a gimmick.

I've been contemplating buying a cheap PSP and doing the whole homebrew thing on it so I can play some old PS1 games without having to dig my old PS1 out. Should I do it? Which PSP would be the easiest to get?
Go with the 2000 models (known as slim). As far as I know the 30010 models are harder to mod and they're pretty much the same.

but i've been out of the PSP game
I will still call it the PSP2.
I got a PSP GO because you can mod them by software and they have 16GB, but you can only have it on 6.20 if you wan't the firmware to not return to official after reset.
There's no disadvantages though I don't think, You can still use PSN.
IGN reported that 85% percent of Wifi models were sold and 56% of 3G models were sold. It doesn't seem too awful, considering that Sony shipped an additional 200,000 units due to strong preorders.

Most of the memory cards are actually sold out too:

"Everybody's Golf" is what's called Hot Shots Golf in NA right

Yup.
I still got the oldest version of PSP.
PSV looks cool though
Just pre-ordered Uncharted, UMvC3, and Wipeout, along with the Wi-Fi system and a GameStop starter kit. Totals around 440$ with tax. Kinda expensive but I'm really excited, granted I've never owned a Sony (or Microsoft, for that matter) gaming platform.
Preordering a Wi-Fi Vita Thursday. In between then, I need to order a game and a memory card (Most likely the 16gb card).
Fucking Sony making Golden Abyss $50 as opposed to $40. I'm almost considering buying something else just in spite of them.

In spite of them? I'm surprised your not boycotting the Vita. I've been hearing a lot of bad things about it and I've been excited for it for a while. It's far too pricey and it's just a PSP with touch screen. There have been complaints that Sony got lazy with it. Lack of features, broken features. A EBGames rep even told me you have to create a new PSN account just for the Vita, which doesn't make any sense. Either his info is wrong or Sony dropped the ball.
Well I want the Vita to replace my PSP, which I currently use for everything else besides gaming. The Vita's games that I'm interested in are really just a plus. Plus I think just calling it a PSP with a touch-screen is a bit unfair, since it seems to pack a lot more punch then the PSP.
That being said, I can certainly see why anyone with a smart phone would probably be uninterested, but I'm pretty hyped about it.
Keep in mind the PSVita is only backwards compatible for games that have been downloaded from the PlayStation Network. Obviously UMDs are not supported. In the end you'll be buying the Vita for 250-300$, the memory stick for an additional 30+$ (memory stick is required apparently, but not included), a data plan (for the 300$ model), games 40-50+$. So you're looking at a price anywhere from 350 to 450. I'd much rather get a PS3 (199$) if I didn't already have one.
Overpriced devices, no matter how cool they may be, are still over priced.
I'll buy one as soon as a GTA game is released on it
Canceled my Wi-Fi system order for a First Edition Bundle. Bumps my bill up to 500$.
Just preordered my Vita and Memory Card today.

Cool thing was this Christmas I activated my free Amazon Prime Trial, so I paid nothing for shipping and handling and got day one delivery.

Luckily, I don't own any psp games anymore, sold them all off. That being said, it does suck dick for anyone with any psp games, but I guess with the format change it's to be expected. I rather have it this way then them sticking with umds. The Vita already has a low battery life, and a UMD drive would just exacerbate the problem.

Yeah, the fucking proprietary memory cards are a rip off, as I was considering just getting the 4gb or 8gb ones, but I figured I was getting fucked either way, so might as well get a decent sized one. Still, that seems more like the norm today. I was considering getting a 3G version, but I decided that I'm not going to use the 3G feature that often as I only plan on taking two trips this year where I'll be dragging the Vita along with.
My total price was like $301 dollars, but that doesn't include the Uncharted purchase I'll probably make in a few weeks time.
