It has to be food. Probably to prevent you from whoring NPCs for wives.
You lose karma for using love potions though.
You have to assign a breeder and wait. That's all there's to it.

Annoying smartness.
Uhm, a bunch of keys are already binded to certain actions. e (NOT UPPERCASE) is set to eat, B is set to mix, and a few others, for all of the x menu.
Elona has pretty standard roguelike key-bindings. The three menu keys are only there for the rogue-like newbies. The rest of the keys work fine.
Here's a helpful hint to the starters; Get the "Before it's too late" quests. They usually pay off a LOT more than any other quests, and are really easy. You just need to know your way around.
Usually it takes ~5 days from Palmia to Noyel, 2 or less for Lumiest, 2 and 1/2 days for Vernis, and 1 day for Yowyn, ~3 days to Derphy, and about 5 for Port Kapul. Or, use a general rule of thumb, never take any of them that has 2 or 3 days, unless it's somewhere close.
Edit: Alt+F4 is the best way for undo-ing serious screwups in the wild
I like this game, but I keep getting killed walking around, or robbed, or something... Any tips to keep that from happening..?

I'm currently using a god character, and Doing really well. I have a 3d12 Metal Claymore, and a Machine gun. I take turns gunning enemies down, Mincing them with the claymore, and Turning them into piles of bones with my spells. I have nothing but the base house, since I don't do most quests. I find the farming and Hunting quests easiest, as my Godlike stats excel most others.

There are sort-of mods for this. The moongates are probably the "mods" you have heard of. You can upload your own map files with whatever monsters or tiles you want.
Unless you're very competent I doubt the average player will be able to do it(or modify the maps). And that's assuming you can read some basic Japanese. Otherwise you won't even be able to navigate the uploader.

'Pologies, I'm just saying I was using a character under the extra race God and doing well. I have yet to do anything with wizard mode that's not on a snail race character. (I realize wizard mode is unforgivable anyway, and doesn't justify itself even with a snail race.) Sorry to disappoint, but If it's in the game and isn't OBVIOUSLY a debug mode, I really don't consider it cheating.
Kinda like snaking in Mario Kart DS.

I just figured out a nice trick. If there's an "I want it!" Quest where someone wants you to get a REALLY NICE item that you want, Kill the person they want it from. 99% of the time, he drops the item. Easy to kill citizens, too, but don't do it if the client is a guard. You'll lose 10 karma. Ouch.

That's basically what I meant, they might be buggy so they aren't ready to be an official race yet, and he said Debug mode, he might not have meant a debug race.
And another thing is the game was originally japanese. so they might not mean what they want to mean when they say Debug.
