• Codemasters wants to sell half games

Half-Life 2: Episode 1: Part 1: Chapters 1-3 You can ALMOST resolve half of the plot! AND it's only twice the price of the full game!!! :monocle:
This won't even happen, and if it ever did: It will cause more people to pirate games.
It's like the film industry tackling piracy by selling half of a movie, ending on a cliffhanger and making you purchase the second half from your couch. It's stupid.
And there's going to be nothing to stop the pirates from ripping the data from the retail half of the game and slapping on the downloadable bit with removed protections; releasing them both together as a full game for free. Mark my words, this is exactly how it will play out.
Now I don't get it. Couldn't one just pirate the other half of the game? Seriously. In a modern age we cannot full stop piracy. Crack down laws sure but you'll only catch 1 in a billion. Selling half games is a bad marketing strategy either way. Pirates will keep on pirating and instead they'll be punishing the legitimate customers they have. You cannot full stop piracy. Just make better content to justify the price.
I personally like Valve's old, OLD method of preloading whole games when you preorder on Steam and then waiting until release to unlock them, but unfortunately for Codemasters, they've already got that covered.
... I think it shows just how GENIUS they are. Anyway, I want a full game at launch not half a game.
This is seriously a retarded idea.
Let them do it. It will bite them in their ass, they'll be forced to not do it anymore, and fairly quickly, or sell their assets away to a competent company. Codemasters aren't what they used to be, and that was DAMN apparent when the new Operation Flashpoint came out... Broken ass piece of shit with false promises and false advertisement, So many people had so many issues, especially with online play, and Codemasters basically just gave up on it, and stopped supporting it about 2 months, if that, after it came out... It was a half assed attempt to just capitalize on a name is all that was
Time to jtag the shit out of my xbox, i guess?
Blizzard are already selling thirds of games.
Here's an idea on how to stop people selling off 2nd hand games: Make GOOD games that people won't want to resell in the first place, thereby removing the entire pre-owned problem. [editline]17th November 2010[/editline]
Blizzard are already selling thirds of games.
Yeah I agree that selling Starcraft 2: Part 1 for full retail price was pretty rough, but it does compete very well in terms of quantity of content to other full games, so I can let that go.
Selling half games is basically like planning expansions before the game is released, I don't think it's that bad. It's like the episodes for HL2
that is probably the most retarded think I have heard.
They do this and about 10 hours after release someone will have cracked it, so you buy the first part, download the rest for free. This would never work.
activision will pick up on this CALL OF DUTY PART 1: $29.99 CALL OF DUTY PART 2: $29.99 CALL OF DUTY PART 3: $29.99 CALL OF DUTY: EXTR3ME DLC: $14.99 CALL OF DUTY: ULTRA DLC: $14.99 CALL OF DUTY PART 5: $59.99
where's part 4 i want to know what happens to captain fanservice, lieutenant invincible and corporal badass :(
WE MUST ALL DO OUR PART TO BATTLE THE EVIL THAT IS SECOND HAND GAME SALES! In all seriousness, why should games be exempt from second-hand ownership when all other forms of media are not? Books, comics, dvds (of both movies and tv shows), audio books, pictures, etc. are all able to be traded, bought, and sold by anyone. Why should games be any different?
What this is, depends heavily on pricing. If the total price of the game is higher than normal, they are trying to get extra money from the consumer. but if the price is as much as a normal game, they are combatting used game sales, so they get more money directed to themselves, instead of the retail store, from the consumer.

"Do this and we'll stop selling Codemasters games. How's that?"
The only thing this is going to produce is more piracy
aww yea I love paying taxes twice
Morons.
Also it's like they saw a DLC hate thread going "the bastards they're selling half the game and you pay more to complete it" and they thought "hey that's a pretty good idea".
I pray that this will be the peak of the stupidity in DLC ideas.
Video Game companies sure know how to troll.
Can someone remind me of a recent and decent game Codemasters has even made? Please? Thanks.
Well, first of all, in the department of regular games, they made overlord, which i liked a lot, i dont really know about overlord 2, but the first was quite nice. Second, while they didnt actually make DDO or LOTRO, they did have something to do with them. And third, they made a few racing games that are pretty well loved, but i dont know anything about them, as i pretty much never play such games.
dear codemasters, why can't you make great games like ToCA 3 again without exploiting stupid DLC shit? i don't ever buy Playstation Network points and i don't have a credit card so that's pretty useless
If there is anyone to blame, it's the marketing division, publishers, shareholders and board of directors.. The former of which is pressed to find ways to make more money out of what essentially is (and should be) a 40~50 dollar product.
From a business standpoint, this is actually a pretty nifty idea to drive profits directly back to the developer.
Agreed, but it's a bit hard on the customers.
Codemasters: Good luck getting that one in. That could be almost as popular with gamers as 'Paid Demos'. On that note: Scratching Codemasters off my 'list of favorite developers' will be a very sad day, but it seems that day is coming if they're serious about this.
