I've been playing the demo mission over and over and I've gotten a lot better at the controls, and the game is definitely growing on me. The graphics are shit hot and the assistance off gimmick can be pretty fun. It still pisses me off sometimes but I guess it'll come with practice. Unfortunately the voice acting, which I was hoping would be better than the AC games, is somehow even worse. In Ace Combat the characters sounded like a mix of convincingly military people and anime cliches. In HAWX it sounds like a bunch of skater kids and their dads. That ground commander guy (the guy who isn't Colonel Bruce) is probably the most annoying video game person in recent history. I hope he's not a recurring character.

I love the demo. OFF mode is fucking amazing.
I was just reading this thread and the game came in the mail, woohoo! Got to go to college in an hour though. God damn it!
Rio looks so fucking awesome, what places can you go in the full game?
It still isn't available on steam. :rage:
I imagine trying to kill a human opponent in multiplayer will involve firing off at least a dozen or more more missiles because quite frankly they suck. Anyone remember the Hornet missiles from Freespace 2 that were useless in multiplayer because they would always insist on flying a lag pursuit curve and would always overshoot if you fire from anywhere other than directly behind your target? Well these missiles are like that, but worse. They always try to fly straight at their targets regardless of how their target is moving which means if you can fly perpendicular to them they'll always overshoot. Save your flares for when they manage to fire them directly behind you. Don't lead you're targets firing these missiles, as they'll just turn twice and probably overshoot. If anything aim a bit behind the target to get them to turn earlier. Don't be afraid to fire off two every time against aircraft, heck fire more if you get the chance. If your target can maneuver reasonably well you'll have to fire plenty of them and hope just a few of them actually hit.
From my experience, the missiles don't suck. You need 2 missiles to shoot down most planes, unless it's the AA missiles which can target 4 aircrafts at a time, it's awesome :D
It'll be released on 3 systems? They should have cross-compatibility between ps3 and 360 - the catch is that it's literally a console war. One team is 360, other ps3. And the Windows users get to be god, controlling weather and causing "flukes" in the player's cockpits. Yeaaaaahh, that's what I'm talkin' bout BOOIII. Make someone crash for kicks. EDIT: No favoritism here. DOUBLE-EDIT: Looks exactly like Ace Combat 6. Not a bad thing, I like that game, but they don't think it's a little bit of a risky business proposal?
I think there should be a game based on "console wars", with each team controlling stuff in a unique way. The game would be CENTRED around cross system play, not just a gimmick. Like you say, ps3 users could be platforming based Xbox360 users could be fps based PC users could be RTS based And then you fight. Cross console, cross genre, crossplay.
Note to everyone: You can mod the game. The .pak files are compressed with a password that is widely available, and most of it uses lua. You can even enable multiplayer combat over LAN and go into free fly mode with the right files. You can't unlock all the planes though, which is sad. It only allows 3 for some reason.
I just played the demo last night, and I liked it a lot. Using one of these makes it a lot more fun.
To be honest, I think there are probably other types of missiles. Perhaps some slower moving ones that are epic at tracking.

The missiles all fly a pure pursuit curve at their targets, which is probably the worst possible pursuit path for a missile to take because it means it will almost always have to turn tighter than its intended target if the target is maneuvering at all. At least if a missile were to fly a lag pursuit path it would swing behind the target so it doesn't have to turn as sharply to keep track or better yet if it leads the target it wouldn't have to turn very tight to begin with, either would be preferable to what these missile do.
Oh god. Just played an intense dogfight with my friend bugster. Those missiles are IMPOSSIBLE to avoid in multiplayer... you really have to do some awesome dodging. I would link you to the pak file, but i'm not sure if it's considered warez. I just googled hawx demo pak files and found it, so it's not difficult to find.
How would files from a demo be considered warez? Also maybe he means where they are located if you have the game.
How would files from a demo be considered warez? If you guys are up for it, we could do an 8 player team deathmatch...

Well from my experience, you can kill any plane by using 2 missiles. Don't blame the missiles for not doing your job completely.
The planes are awesome, I'm really enjoying the raptor and the SU-something :D
The planes are awesome, I'm really enjoying the raptor and the SU-something :D
Say what? How did you manage to get the raptor? Is there a mod for it, or sth? I'd really love to fly the Raptor and the A10 :D
Go ahead guys, if it's from a demo it's not warez :)
not on the xbox.
I found the game harder on the xbox because of the turning upwards in the guided flying parts
I usually fly without using "assistance off" mode so as a result I don't skid very much, so out of habit I sometimes vector roll as a substitute and in doing so I might have accidently made a bit of an unusual discovery. Due to the screwed up physics in this game, the vector roll is many times more awesome in this game than it is in real life! It did not occur to me previously to that such a maneuver would actually work in such arcadey dogfighting game (I was just doing it so I wouldn't have to switch to assistance off and skid), but in this game it seems to work ridiculously well. Because planes don't bleed off speed much when turning, the vector roll can now double as a lag roll, meaning you can not only use it to adjust your aspect relative to your target but you can use it to quickly back off as well. If you don't want that you can cancel out the effect by increasing the throttle as you level out. Also, because of the way the missiles track, they generally cannot hit you in a vector roll. While the "assistance off cut throttle and turn" skid leaves you vulnerable to incoming missiles, the vector roll can serve the same re-positioning purpose while at the same time making you difficult to hit with missiles from most directions except directly behind you. Also, the lead indicators for your opponents guns won't be accurate while you are vector rolling because you are rotating on more than one axis, temporarily forcing your target's buddies to shoot by eye. Because of this it's a relatively "safe" maneuver to do while being fired upon. If done correctly it can place you right behind you opponent even if your opponent's plane can turn tighter than yours, making it easier to hit with your own missiles. To add some extra icing on the cake, it's actually much easier to do in this game than in a flight sim because in this game it turns out almost perfectly symmetrical (or at least as symmetrical as it can be), meaning there is no throttle or brake control involved. That being said, it still takes a bit of practice to do smoothly, but not nearly as much as in real life or in a flight sim.

I can't seem to get the demo to work, I download it from steam, and when its fully down I double click and it says "HAWX.exe has encountered an error and has to close" I've tried reinstalling.
So I wonder if you could mod new planes in.. I want to fly a f-35. Unless its a plane you can be already considering this takes place in 2015.
