Both of which I think most players consider "features." Minecarts that don't suck and an ingame map are content. They're an advantage in the same sense having buckets while everyone else didn't would be.

Pretty much.
Minecraft is an awesome setup, but you could do so much with it beyond just letting people sandbox with the tools he put in that it's asinine to try stopping them. Again, Cortext Command- neat idea, needed people adding content and ideas for it to actually be fun in the long-term.

He will stop caring once he gets a proper client-side mod system in place. As it is, it has to inject code into the .jar, and can't keep proper consistency with servers due to the game not having proper in-built clientside/serverside distinctions.

He probably wants people to stop until he can get it working correctly. Notice how he is fine with server mods, which can just as drastically modify the game. Thats because they don't bleed through and hurt singleplayer, unlike Client-side mods.

Just create a checkerboard pattern of 4 unit deep pits with 3 unit tall cacti surrounding them and normal ground covering on the top.

I don't know if this has been posted before, when I woke up there was 225 new posts in the old thread and 11 pages in this thread, so I couldn't be bothered to read them all.
A great way to make portals to the nether, is to simply make a form of dirt or cobblestone (Anything easily removed will do.), pour one lava source in the bottom of it. Make water fall on the lava source, obsidian should be created in the place of the lava source. Use this technique to create the whole portal.
It works fine in the normal world, but when you're in the nether, the water simply evaporates when you use it. So to create another portal in the nether, you will have to have some mined obsidian to place.
Anyway, it is quite fun to make portals this way.

You have an example handy for some undue load a mod is giving a server? I mean an actual, this-has-happened-to-you-or-a-friend, screencap supported example.
Regardless, though, that's the server owner's problem, not Notch's. Moderation is a magical thing.
