Dig a mine shaft down to bedrock, then cover it with a layer of something so you are at bedrock +1. Then go straight in all directions using the efficient mining technique.

Haha it will suck for you then if notch reintroduces the depth thing for monster spawns.
You could also make a grid like that, but instead of skipping 2, you skip 3, and connect the tunnels every 2 blocks.

Well as I made something like this, I made a 7x7 wide hole to the bedrock and found like 6 iron and about 10 redstone....
