Depends on what you plan on doing with it, but more than likely, yeah. It's fun just to explore, even if you don't like the building aspects of it, and with MCEdit now there's an easy way to do massive structures fast.
So if I used the old HD patch would it work? The current one isn't working for me.

Not at all. Creative made me think the game was going to be complete crap. It was video and screenshots that other people posted that made me realize alpha was much better and actually worth the money.

That's not true a lot of times I find creative more enjoyable than survival. It's objective changes from building neat things with friends and just messing around and enjoying stuff to hitting rare blocks in a dark cave until you have enough to make into other rare blocks and then getting the shit scared out of you by monsters.
So I found this natural cave, It was a perfect rectangle.

That's what SMP is for. Singleplayer alpha is for the times you mentioned and SMP is great for just building with friends.

My old tree room only gave the trees 5 blocks of vertical space to grow, it took WEEKS in-game to get even one.
I've started raising the ceiling and:
