You have the first layer, ice, and under that is fire, and under that is hellstone. Everyone is given diamond pickaxes, so they can speed up the process and add a bit of strategy, but it would be intense. You are not out of the game until you die, so if you fall on the hellstone, you still could recover yourself if you can somehow get back onto the ice.
