• A stalker themed mod

Unity was one I had in mind. Other Ideas were UE3, the cryengine 2 and ogre. Cryengine might be a good idea since it is very well-documented, with there being a whole book out and all, where as for source, you ahve to rely on experience and your skill to code custom features. I met up with some Crytech devs recently and discussed some of the modding potential and was amazed by how they seem to support modding. I never really got into the subject myself but from what they told me it ould definately be worth considering.
Some classical stalker-weapons will make an appearance, done from scratch, since we can't really rip CSG's models for copyright reasons. I'll include some differend types of guns. Not much sense in just re-making the existing arsenal. As of now, I'll be out of order for the next two weeks due to upcoming exam. After that, it's moddelin' time. Anyone up for some exotic so-ugly-they're-beautifull guns?
What do you mean "Copyright reasons"? If you aren't going to try and profit with the content, you should be able to do whatever the fuck you want.
Please note that as a beginning, we will make this a Source mod, later on I will play a bit with Unity Pro, make some gameplay elements.
Your hideous deer is beautiful! Shame you're choosing source, it won't handle the outside environments, mass bumpmaps, full dynamic lighting and roaming Ai of stalker very well :( Awesome content though!
Uhm... Erm... If you know what you're doing, Source can handle alot. Dynamic lighting is easy as hell, they did it in CS:GO, 2 Week Mod, City 17: Episode 1, the list goes on. Outside environments are easy if you know how to do them right, Source maps can get pretty big. AI could probably be sketchy and wonkey but if done right you could make them roam pretty well. Again, the most problems you would encounter with this project on Source would probably be the open enviornments, and I've seen many ways to hack and slash your way around that. Here's a picture of some good Source Mapping http://media.moddb.com/cache/images/mods/1/19/18531/thumb_620x2000/infra_c2_m10062.jpg
Still doesn't big enough compared to a single STALKER map.
It's perfectly big enough to cover a single original STALKER map (not counting CoP). Source can handle bigger maps than you think, it just takes a lot of optimisation to get it to compile at a decent speed and without performance issues.
You know, they don't have to make an exact STALKER copy in terms of gameplay. They could have Half-Life'ish gameplay and use STALKER as story and aesthetics. Sure, add some GUI for ammo management or medkits but the main point is that they might not even need huge maps because that's not STALKER's main selling point in the first place. They could make a tad smaller maps with more linear gameplay like Metro. Doesn't mean it will be a bad mod, on the contrary. All they need to do then is to improve the story to make it interesting.
I myself will be confident that no matter what the dev decides to do with this, I will be happy with the result.
It could work if it has the sort of linearity of the last few levels of Clear Sky and Shadow of Chernobyl. Those were kind of Half-Lifeish in practice.
It could work if it has the sort of linearity of the last few levels of Clear Sky and Shadow of Chernobyl. Those were kind of Half-Lifeish in practice.
But it kinda clashed with stalker-typical gameplay. I had just saved enough money and awesome artefacts to get all my cool upgrades and cash, but the game kept pushing me forward, away from traders and mechanics. I kept thinking, 'Oh well, I'll come across one eventually', not knowing that I was about to complete the main quest and that there was no going back. I wanted to quest for a bit, then freeroam and do business with my earnings, like normal, but it was just linear from that point on. When I reached the final battle and everyone was excited and all "Stalker, help us fight and win, you are the only hope, go do shit bla bla defeat monolith" I kinda thought, well, fine and dandy, but when can I get back into the zone and do my stuff? Linear gameplay is not a bad thing for stalker, but you need hubs to return to from linear missions.

After the final battle a door opens that gives you a level transition back to the base. Every time it's a bit different with dialogue and so on. From there you can choose like one of three missions you'll do first and each one has it's perks. One might give you a shotgun, one might give you lots of ammo and the last one could give you more squadmates, idunno. It'll still be linear in a way but you get some berth in your playthrough. I've seen it done in CSS: Sci-Fi, so you should be able to do it too. Just get a mission hub and then the player can choose which raid to go to first. That way they can advance the plot in a way that you can control while giving the player at least some feeling of control.

It's the prelude. This is how you got into the zone.
It's the prelude. This is how you got into the zone.
Blacked out drunk one night, and woke up sitting on top of an apartment block in Pripyat with a Gauss Gun and a Monolith suit.
Blacked out drunk one night, and woke up sitting on top of an apartment block in Pripyat with a Gauss Gun and a Monolith suit.
Replace gauss gun and monolith suit with vodka, a bolt and leather jacket and it could actually get challenging. Your mission is to get the fuck out of the Zone meaning that the beginning will be excruciating and in the end of Cordon you actually have to face the Wave, a massive mutant horde that you accidentally released in Pripyat while you were drunk. Mutants and military are fighting amongst themselves and you have to survive the onslaught with your AKS/74U and trusty bolt. Are you bad enough dude to survive the Wave?
