The difference for me is that:
Survival is free and does not get updated.
Indev costs and get updated.

I think trees need direct sunlight and dirt, not to mention the proper space to grow. Someone said before that they grow faster when near water, but I haven't confirmed it myself.
Holy hell, Minecraft is evolving. I really have to buy it sooner or later. The game itself is very interesting and I love to support independent developers. They deserve it the most.

You can't advertise it on Steam when it's not on Steam. Notch said he would contact them as soon as the game is nearing completion and there is a downloadable client.
