Guys, the AO mod looks SOOOOOO GOOOOD with painterly...
I'm just a little concerned about stability and whether it could comprimise my saves. Can people reassure me / put me off based on their experiences please?
I really don't want it screwing up my saves or some shit.

Hasn't corrupted any of my saves, and hasn't made the game unstable either.
The AO is sexy, but the gradient is too large in my opinion. The blocks look too 'shiny' this way.

In my opinion, the current one fits nicely with small mining shafts and such, but the smaller one could be better for exterior places.
Okay, how the hell do you shade player skins. I've got GIMP, and I can't find a way to make it look natural.
Yeah, stone, wood, glass and stuff like that look fine, but sand/dirt etc. looks really bad I'd say.

You can still use the SkinEditor and instead of playing around with transparency, darken the pixels manually. Takes much more work though.

Its quite easy to do manual shading if you use SkinEdits built in dodge and burn. Check Help -> Controls.
(If I remember correctly holding ALT and right/left click is normal shading and ALT and CTRL + mouse would be extra powerful one)
the burn/dodge is quite buggy

First, the AO. It's the same thing I mentioned above. HQ gradients just don't fit minecraft style. Also shadows shouldn't be on skins at all. Minecraft has its ligthing system. Do you see shading on terrain textures? No. When the playerskins have this kind of shading, they just stand out and look ugly.
Second, the texture he has there. Those are just random stains. Looks 'worn out' and ugly.
The shading I do isn't really shading, I just don't know what to call it.
