Try releasing the left mouse button when you have finished mining a block. It doesn't always work but I've found it seems less likely to reappear.
The problem is the timing of how the server receives and sends out 'chunks' of data summarising the world. This means that once you've finished mining/doing something, your game will send the data to the server (Whether the server is your computer or across the world makes no difference), At the same time (or just before) the server has sent out the data describing the world before what you were doing. This overwrites what you have done and the incoming communication from your computer is ignored.

Be patient. You're both whitelisted on at least one other server, so you could play on that until you hear news on whether or not you'll be whitelisted and there's always singleplayer as well.

As long as you can run .exes you're fine to play it. Just be sure to log in with it at home once, so that it can verify you've bought the game and it'll download the .jars and other files.
