How exactly do heirlooms work? Do you just buy them with emblems and they work for all characters (providing it's the right type of armour/weapon)?

I bought the heirlooms with my 80 warrior, and sent them to my 71 mage. You can buy them with emblems or wintergrasp stone keeper shards thingies.
