You shouldn't commit yourself by getting in close unless you have no other choice. Taking the guaranteed kill away would make the game more tactical.

In the CFG turning r_multiGPU to 0 (if your card doesn't have more than 1 core/not running into SLI), turning r_multithreaded_device to 1 (if you've got Dual Core or more) and turning r_glow_allowed to 0
