The exact definition of Ad Populum is that a claim is true because a majority of people are favourably inclined towards it. The inclination tends to be emotionally based.
In this case the claim (more like implication) is that X amount of people liked him, therefore the opinion that is unfavourable is wrong.

No sorry, it doesn't work like that, if millions of people like an artist to the extent that there are many more people who like the artist than those who don't, that means the artist is good, he has done his job correctly. Millions of people do like Peter Jackson and his wide variety of films would lead me to believe more like him than those who dislike him amongst those who know of his existence therefore he has also done his job correctly for his trade. When it comes to trades where someone is successful if he is liked by many people then you cannot say he is bad simply because you do not, especially when you attempt to use a latin phrase to make it seem more elegant than it really is.

If it is successful, that means it did something right and achieved some sort of goal, therefore, in someones eyes, it must be good. It's all opinions. If I say I hate something, there is going to be someone else who loves it. Again, arguing over nothing.
