This seems to be the only thread I could find on this. The game doesn't seem to be popular on Facepunch seeing as how there isn't an active thread and it comes out in two days.
However, I wanted to see if that was just my impression. I could get this as a birthday present, but I'm not sure whether or not I should get it now or wait until later. I know the past few Silent Hills have been unfavorable to fans of the earliest games.
What do you guys think? Excited or no?
Shit, it comes out in two days?
Guess I'll be at Blockbuster to try it out soon then.

OP hasn't been online for a couple of months, worth making an updated megathread?

It's out already?

Oh woah I thought this thread was made today :v:
Wait so is it going to be on PC or not? Some places say one, some say the other.
[editline]12th March 2012[/editline]
Aw it looks like it's quite combat-oriented.
IGN thinks it's crap: http://ps3.ign.com/objects/069/069283.html
Gameinformer thinks it's mediocre: http://www.gameinformer.com/games/silent_hill_downpour/b/xbox360/archive/2012/03/12/silent-hill-downpour-review-foggy-with-a-chance-of-mediocrity.aspx
Destructoid liked it: http://www.destructoid.com/review-silent-hill-downpour-222794.phtml
Going off of the Gamestop video review up there, I think I'll avoid it for a while. Lots of running around and combat, doesn't seem like much fun.
I don't know about PC version, sorry simkas.
This is sad, I was really looking forward to this.
After having played it for around an hour and a half, I have to say that I'm not really surprised at how bad it is. I recorded my gameplay so I'll edit this post later with a link to the first video if you're interested.

Post it in the megathread, I'll add it to the OP if you'd like too.
Sounds good.
spoiler alert:
it's shit

As promised, first part of my Downpour playthrough, has commentary, so don't watch if that's not your thing.
Oh hell no.
They brought back the glowing light from SH3. That damn thing scared the hell out of me.

So at 1:06, I have my first encounter with a Weeping Bat, and uh, things get a little.....weird.
This game doesn't look bad but I feel like I should beat at least the second game first.

Ehhhhhhhhhhhhh, as a long time Silent Hill fan, I'd recommend skipping it, uninspired enemies, lackluster AI pathfinding, horrendous collision detection, nonsensical objectives (really, I have to stop ghost patrol cars, wtf?) and a seriously gimped combat system actually make me place this lower than Homecoming and Origins honestly.
As a long time Silent Hill fan, I'd recommend trying it. Silent Hill has always had a terrible combat system, and it seems like the new devs really get what Silent Hill is. In my opinion, it's at least as good as SH4.

I will admit the monsters are fucking terrible and the ghost cars are stupid. Other than that, I don't regret buying it.
Two things.
1. Does it have the same atmosphere to previous games?
2. Did Akira Yamaoka compose the music for the game and was Mary Elizabeth McGlynn vocals in any of the music.?
Those for me are the only things that are needed to enjoy a silent hill game.
Apart from Shattered Memories. Fog and raining ash not fog and snow.
Akira yomaoka didn't do the music, But mary elizabeth did do the vocals for some of the songs i think. And supposedly the music is alright.

The atmosphere is a little bit different than the other games considering you fight enemies sometimes in broad daylight, not just in the fog or rain or whatever you want to call Downpour's monster ridden world. There are also far more characters in this game than the others, so it's much more along the lines of the more recent Silent Hills, rather than the legacy games.
Yamaoka did not compose the music, as far as McGlynn goes, I can't answer that one, but I assume she's on some tracks.

Have to say I'm not picking this one up. The music in my opinion was one of the strongest parts that made Silent Hill, Silent Hill.
Akira Yamaoka is my favourite composers for video game music. Sounds childish but survival horror isn't what it used to be and the music at the least could of taken me back to when I used to play the originals, when I used to turn my play station off in fear of those mangled kids with kitchen knives.
I heard on GT this was the last attempt of a Silent Hill game if this one didn't make a impact Silent Hill is done for.
Honestly, Silent Hill was dead when Team Silent departed after Silent Hill 4. The worst mistake they made was making Yamaoka producer on the later games, his strong suit is music.

True, the only reason I kept buying the games after team Silent was because his music kept the atmosphere a joy to play through. But this game has gone to far. The "rules" of Silent Hill keep changing.
They should of just kept to the foggy tainted town that rains ash. Rather than mixing in loads of crap that wasn't needed if you know what I mean? What is with the rain?
where all the aliens at?
you know

I stand by that Downpour is more of a Silent Hill game than Homecoming was. Homecoming took the shitty easy route by going off the movie and slapping in stupid shit to appease the fans and force gore horror. It wasn't a terrible game, I actually enjoyed it, but it deserved a lot of the shit it got.
Downpour, in a way, gets the mentality that Silent Hill 2 set where everybody is in their own personal hell. Murphy's hell is full of gloomy wetness, lightning, and cages (because he's a prisoner). The Otherworld is more interesting than I thought it would be. There's a part where a room turns into a vast forest.
It's not perfect. The world is almost too open, the combat is right awful, and the monsters are uncreative and stupid-looking. One of the enemies is just a shirtless guy who scratches at you, and the ghost coppers are cheap as shit. I thought the music was pretty great aside from the weird shitty title Korn song. I just feel like the new developers actually tried to make a Silent Hill game, and they gave it a good shot.
Here is a useful link with maps to the locations of the blue bird cages, if anyone is doing that side quest:
