Uh, all of my friends back in High School used Steam and played HL2 mods along with CSS/DOD:S with me all the time... Don't know about what kind of friends you have but seriously, who cares what a bunch of faggots at school think?

Other faggots at school.

Once you accept that you are in the higher class of people, the PC Gaming lovers of Valve, you will realize why almost everyone hates Valve.
Because almost everyone are in the lower class (aka Console only gamers).
I play consoles, but PC > Consoles by far. :U
I bet if HL2 were really popular, it would be known as "mainstream shit".

Elitism isn't cool if you show it off like a 5-inch-dick.
Too be completely honest, fuck whoever doesn't want to play HL/HL2. You know why? Because the people who do play these games are usually really cool and interesting people. Imagine if Facepunch was a forum based on a MW2 mod or something, it'd be a cesspool of idiocy. Fact of the matter is, the fact that Valve didn't hype up the Half-Life or Portal as much as say, L4D2, makes the community better. Unlike the extremely hyped shooters nowadays that have playerbases and communities consisting of extremely hot headed children under 16. Un hyped games have somewhat of an idiot filter, because, the people who do play them, appreciate them for more then just killing the people in it and screaming into their microphone.
I'm 14. Bought it first when I was 12. Started playing at a friends house at 10 maybe.
Best fucking games ever.
[editline]01:52PM[/editline]
After Assassin's Creed and [PROTOTYPE].
My friend thinks TF2 and L4D 1/2 are shit because they are "cartoony"
even though they have excellent game play.
and i feel like MW2 is grainy ass shit
Everyone at my school knows about Half-Life. But it's a game development school and a third of the students have to build levels in the game.
You're in the best school ever.
I have to admit that everybody in my class play HL2. But they suck at shooting and I sometimes have to help them.
Have 1 friend that knows a bit about the HL universe. The rest just knows that you either need HL2 or CSS to be able to play gmod...
I was going to see if there was L4D2 spot.
Never appeared.

Also, i watched a TOP 10 best games of 2009 and they said:
#15 (Last position) - Left 4 Dead 2
#1 - Modern Warfare 2
Just becuase it was overhyped.

nah man its da best game ever noob
I didn't really like Half-Life 2. Half-Life 1 (well not really called 1 but then I wont mess up which one I am talking about) was good. And it still is. But for me the gameplay of Half-Life 2 got stale really fast.
most of my friends know Hl2 because of me. i showed the game for them, they even played the non-steam CS before buying it :P
they played HL Deathmatch a lot.
My best friend who only plays "Microsoft Flight Simulator X" (seriously that's all he plays, he has no other PC games or console games that he plays) thinks Half-Life 2 is "Rubbiiiiiiiish".
The only person I have ever met who knew of Half Life 2 was a very cool guy.
Everyone else thought it probably sucked.
Sorta like that with me. The only person I know who has played HL2 is this one chick I met (and then quickly fell in love with for this reason) and everyone else I ask says "sounds gay".
The name doesn't exactly stir intrest in the mainstream crowd.
It's because they're all 12 year old Xbox LIVE Addicts who don't know about the game and assume it's shit anyways.
until last year, i had no idea there was a company called VALVe
then i watched videos of half life 1
then got interested
then got the game
beat it...
needless to say now i have episode 1 and 2 (beat ep1, close with ep2) and now have tf2 aswell, PLUS gmod
and i love them all and i am patiently waiting for episode 3, i may get portal
valve is a great video game company

....
i really need half life 2
I think instead of blaming CoD and the like, you need to appreciate several things:
1. Half-Life 2 is 6 years old now, if you haven't heard of it by now then you're probably not going to go out of your way just to play it.
2. The Half-Life games aren't all about running around and killing people, it has a big storyline with it and if you haven't played the original Half-Life then Half-Life 2 makes no sense whatsoever. The least VALVe could have done is included the original in the Orange Box so new gamers have a clue about what's happening.
3. Even if you do understand the story, it doesn't mean it'll interest you. Lots of gamers now are more interested in games that are driven by action, not physics puzzles and trying to work out what's happening next in the storyline.
4. VALVe don't advertise the Half-Life series very much, and there are more games for PC and consoles than ever.
5. Most people are VALVe fanboys, to some degree. You're bound to like the series more than any other.
I completely agree with many points that people are making, and it is a shame that more people aren't aware of the series, but you can't expect everyone to know about a saga that started in the 90s and only gets occasional additions to itself.
People in my old High School thought Half-Life was "dat game dat try to be Halo but ain't even good at being Halo naa mean?"
Am I the only one that finds Day Of Defeat to be a bit underrated? I played with a bunch of great guys the other day and had a wicked good time. I love organized team play.

I bought and played Half-Life 2 without playing Half-Life one and was instantly able to jump into the storyline, but maybe that's just me.
Although you are absolutely correct in saying that the general population these days is more interested in just running around and shooting things that move instead of actually trying to think of ways to solve puzzles.
So much elitism in this thread.
And I love it. :smugdog:

DOES NOT COMPLY
aaah yes that's another thing, all the console gamers (not that I have much against them, I see the appeal of playing games from a sofa) don't understand the concept of mods, and how much they can bring to a game.
But seriously, I'm the only person in my circle of friends that hasn't played MW2, but the only one that HAS played HL2, TF2, and Portal. Ah well, their loss.

Same situation I have, It actually makes me somewhat sad.
If Valve announced Ep3 ( Which probably won't) at E3, the next day at School I can expect this.
"What's HL2: Ep3?"
"Some retard puzzle game by Valve, they should sick to L4D"
"Wow, the game graphics sucks completely, no good weapons at all or story-line, no explosions either."
Then the next second they start talking about Nukes and guns in MW2 and talking about L4D2 like they do every-day. It's all I hear during lunch, "Did you get that Nuke and noob-tube in MW2 last night?" I even heard them talk about it during Class.

Slap them.
Slap them hard.
Slap them so hard that they cry.

Today I asked them if they knew who the name of the game company that made MW2 was.
I was expecting them to say "Who?", but they didn't. Tomorrow I'll ask them who Valve is.
My inner circle of friends at school all own at least 1 valve game and there are some other people I don't talk to the make maps for hl2. The typical "GAMER" at my school is a jock who only talks about how they went 24-12 last night. I feel sorry for people at our school who don't play it because they have no clue what people are talking about.
They know about it at my school, cause I force it down their throats. (Serious.)
