Well i only found out about Half Life through Counter Strike 1.6 when i was 10 or something. Then i wiki'd it and found out this mysterious "Valve" company made Half Life.
Yeah, most people at out school play MW2. Most people may of heard of Left 4 Dead, but definitly not Valve. In fact, there are only a few people that know about TF2. Some PC Gamer nerds, two wannabe TF2 players (keep reciting the Meet the Team videos, but don't own TF2) and two /b/tards that keep yelling "Grabbin' peels!" and "Gentlemen"
Too be completely honest, fuck whoever doesn't want to play HL/HL2. You know why? Because the people who do play these games are usually really cool and interesting people. Imagine if Facepunch was a forum based on a MW2 mod or something, it'd be a cesspool of idiocy. Fact of the matter is, the fact that Valve didn't hype up the Half-Life or Portal as much as say, L4D2, makes the community better. Unlike the extremely hyped shooters nowadays that have playerbases and communities consisting of extremely hot headed children under 16. Un hyped games have somewhat of an idiot filter, because, the people who do play them, appreciate them for more then just killing the people in it and screaming into their microphone.
Hmmm, True. Although TF2 used to a hidden gem, now it's slowly becoming more known, which is a bad thing. A year ago it had a great community, now the pub servers are filled with crap.
Orangebox weren't that popular due to not descriptive enough covers or there was the "5 games in a pack? Probably crap games" effect in place.
(or lack of updates)
This. When i only knew Half Life 1, and even then I only knew it as "That guy with the crowbar", i saw the Orange Box on the shelf and i thought "Hmm, okay, Half Life 2, must be the newer version of Half Life, graphics seem okay. Portal and TF2? Portal sounds like some short shit game they made on their lunch break, and TF2 looks like some indie developer trying to be unique with cartoonish graphics"
Yeah well i was wrong about Portal and TF2.
Because they were 3 years old when HL2 was released.
I was five, and I still played it. Sure, I didn't know what the fuck I was doing, but it was fun. And I kept wondering why my screen would fall onto the ground and turn red and me have to start over.
Oh, wait...
But then hl2 would get royaly pissed on by people who know nothing about the games and will never get the story line and all around make... Distastful. References like they did for portal. THE CAKE ISN'T A LIE YOU JUST DON'T DESERVE ANY!!!
And discusting hl2 themed porn ( more so than now) will flood the internet shitting all over our scientist friends and their security gaurd buddy who owes one a beer

Nah they wont do that because portal gamers are a sort of closed niche community. We really dont welcom people in my experiances who just show up with a new release and zero knowleged about the theory behind thinking with portals.
What valve should do is pacage portal and portal 2. Have one comercial during a live event that a majority population is watching and keep it vague to the point where only loyal players and valve efficianados would be able to instantly recognise it and then get the gamer populace to spread the word from there as we are prone to do time and again when a great valve game comes out.
Please leave, your attempted pretentiousness is making it hard to breathe. Although, some of your points are correct.
Ah, ok.
I wish there were houndeyes in HL2, though, they were so awesome.
SMOD has them every couple of levels.
