Haha, I just got my joystick and tic was helping me earlier.
I've had tonnes of trouble actually shooting anything down that isn't slow and a bomber.
God that was awsome I shot llama down 3 times in a hg-II
So I was playing on tic's server and was flying that really flimsy looking bomber thing and something Bible worthy happened. I was flying at about 1000meters and then EdtheFirst comes along and blows part of a wing off and kills all of my controls sending me in a downwards spiral towards the earth. But then the spiral pancaked out closer to the ground and I pretty much landed safe and sound like a frisbee on the ground with no extra damage from impact and the pilot, nose gunner, and radio man still alive.

Yeah, but it was an amazing sight. The plane just gently floated down to the ground. It was like a two minute descent, but initial impact in the sky was super violent. It just sent him careening out of control to then gently set foot on the ground.

It says my game version differed when I bought IL2 through steam!
I can't seem to play the game with a joystick. Autopilot and it immediately banks to the left when I'm in the air.
With a keyboard/mouse my plane also rams itself to the left, but at least I can take off, it just takes me a good 20 minutes before a single bullet hits anything and I'm out of ammo.
Guess I just suck.

You need to patch it because Steam doesn't provide auto update for IL2.

Just imagine an electric drill, when you set it to full speed and pull the trigger, you can feel the force turning the drill itself to the left.
That's why I prefer planes with counter rotating blades or jet engines. With the exception of the J2M, which can reach 10, 000 metres in under 10 minutes.
Also, the Me-410 has a bitch of a flutter effect.

Try to gain as high altitude as you can before combat. If you have a fast plane and you're getting chased by a slower plane, don't try to turn away. Don't use Zero for learning plane.
That's some tips, but there are alot of tactics, and it would take alot of time. I suggest you first try to learn to fly stable and have controll. You also have to learn how to take off and land. When you have a good grip on that, then you can start learning dogfight tactics. You can look up on the internet to find some really nice sites that shows real manouvers planes uses.
I must be doing it wrong then. Whenever I get enemies on my tail, I turn hard and pull off any manoeuvres I know.
They always get me in the end. :(

I think I'm going to get on. I need to learn how to take off correctly, I can get off the runway fine but almost as soon as I get off my plane starts wobbling and goes into an uncontrollable corkscrew into the ground.

I hate jet engine planes. You have to stay over 500Kph to push the engine so it actually gives alright thrust or you'll overheat.

You're pulling back too much. Pull back about half as much as you currently are.
