Whenever the internet goes down for extended periods of time, I reinstall both of these. Whenever I reinstall Windows, these are two of the first programs on there. I've reinstalled Diablo 2 so many times that I just need to only briefly glance at the CD key to remind myself when typing it in. Also, playing as much Pharaoh as I did during my formulative years is probably responsible for most of my OCD tendencies today. Oh well, it was worth it - still is, actually. That whole series of games still has perfectly tight gameplay. There is nothing modern city-building games do that Pharaoh/CaesarIII/Emperor hadn't already perfected over a decade ago. The aesthetics of the series (Pharaoh in particular) are so perfect and colorful that all modern 3d city games are ugly in comparison.
Deus Ex
Actually deus ex is the game which have NOT stood the test of time While its an amazing game (best story rpg fps game ever in my opinion) it was buggy, clunky and outdated even for it's time.
I agree with you, both deus exs are really clunky I still think the graphics of the first one are impressive though
Actually deus ex is the game which have NOT stood the test of time While its an amazing game (best story rpg fps game ever in my opinion) it was buggy, clunky and outdated even for it's time.
yeah - it's funny that Doom appeared as the first game in the thread, seeing as how it's really only good for nostalgia at this point. Nobody actually just sits down and plays Doom because it's fun. The game is painfully obsolete. First person shooters generally don't age well, with some exceptions (Swat 4 for instance - though I'd blame that more on the FPS genre's hollywoodization; realistic, down to earth FPSes don't get any publisher support whatsoever these days, so Swat 4 is still the best in it's particular niche.)
SWAT 4 I play it with my friends whenever we LAN.
That game was way too fucking hard. The members of your team were so stupid that they would often drop a grenade at their feet instead of throwing it into the room like you asked. The people you were after could always take you and your team members out in 1-3 shots, not that your team members were intelligent to begin with. Also, getting shot in the leg when you're doing the mission with the bombs makes that mission impossible to complete and would really slow the game down otherwise. It's still an awesome game, if it weren't for those difficulty issues. Seriously, fuck that. Also, Black for XBOX/PS2 is still pretty good.
Nobody actually just sits down and plays Doom because it's fun. The game is painfully obsolete.
bullshit. I still sit down and play Doom. no other game did its gameplay better, especially not the games that say they do (looking at you serious sam). Minesweeper and solitare, two of the games which truly stood the test of time.
World of Warcraft :v:
No one's said Morrowind? Really? Just about every game that has fully supported the modding community has stood the test of time The only one I can think of off the top of my head that didn't have a huge modding community would be Rollercoaster Tycoon
Actually deus ex is the game which have NOT stood the test of time While its an amazing game (best story rpg fps game ever in my opinion) it was buggy, clunky and outdated even for it's time.
It never was buggy enough to be considered game breaking. Hell, to this time, it's the most well thought-out game next to Fallouts.
Nobody actually just sits down and plays Doom because it's fun. The game is painfully obsolete.
I still do. Sometimes I just want to open a game, and instantly get a huge gun and blow things up. Nothing delivers that better than Doom. Not to mention the thousands of mods which are way more than enough to keep me interested.
No one's said Morrowind? Really?
try fighting something then tell me it stood the test of time
Super Mario 64. I'd still go and start a new file just to play it through again.
Tetris, or variations thereof. Play it with my friends from time to time.
CS, most versions of Team Fortress (especially TF2) and most of the civilization games are still really popular.
It never was buggy enough to be considered game breaking. Hell, to this time, it's the most well thought-out game next to Fallouts.
The developers actually included dialogues that were supposed to happen only if you cheated or broke the game, so that is amazing, especially for its time. Here's my list: Deus Ex Half-Life 1 & 2 Fallout 1 & 2 GTA: Vice City Unreal Tournament Counter-Strike
Oblivion. Imperial Guards in particular.
Banjo-Tooie, Excitebike 64, Super Mario 64, etc. Pretty much all the games I played when I was a kid are still more fun than most of the games I own now.
whats with people mentioning fairly new games (6 years is not that much) like oblivion etc
Metal Gear Solid 1
Halo Combat Evolved.
