As if I could explain art through words. Too understand why it's so great you have to understand the artist way of life. Go ahead and call it stupid, pretentious and a waste of time. I'll just tell you straight up that it's not.

This is the best cop-out post I've ever seen.
Can someone actually fucking tell me what the hell happened in the story
I literaly didn't get anything
the only part that i understood was when the narrator said that, esther or something, fucked a sheep.
Fighting over opinions :geno:
You know what I don't get? I love this mod, ever one seems to hate it. But when they do the same thing in Korsakovia, every one loves it because they threw in a shitty combat element.
Robert Frost is poetry. Edgar Allen Poe is poetry. Dear Esther was not poetry.
Just cause some po-mo artsy fartsy guy puts effort into something doesn't make it good.
You just don't get it, maaaan.
edit: Explain why it's so good. If it's as good as you say it is then the analysis should be easy.
half of the people in this thread look like this:

I just replayed it again after a year, and it remains to be one of my favorite mods, if not my favorite. The music was beautiful and the narrating was immersive and full of emotion.
Sure the mapping wasn't that great and some of the textures and stuff could use some work, but I ignored all of that and enjoyed every bit of it.
I can't remember the last time I actually immersed myself like that. Those of you who want to wait for the remake to come out, I strongly recommend you play the one that's already out. To really enjoy it you have to be patient, not notice the small flaws in mapping, and really immerse yourself. It is truly an incredible mod.

It's almost like reading a really good book. You have to be patient to get it through the pages, but it brings out so much emotion.
I just played this for the first time, it was cool in some aspects, but not perfect.
I can't wait for the remake, it looks BEAUTIFUL.

I know right.
It's an entirely new style of poetry. A style that uses new game technologies to tell a story. It is art, and it's got to be one of my all time favorite mods.

Or maybe your standards are so low after years of horrible videogame plots that anything remotely ambitious seems like the next Tolstoy.
th89 why is your name two letters and a number?
But yeah this game was released without any sort of play testing at all by the creator so yeah.
In chemistry, Th-89 is an isotope of Thorium with a mass number (in amu/atomic mass units) of 89. This means that the amu of both the neutrons and protons add up to be 89. Neutrons and protons both are 1 amu. However, Thorium has 90 protons because its atomic number is 90, so Th-89 must have 90 protons and -1 neutrons. This may be a reference to one of several things: the idea of negative mass, exotic matter, the idea that dark matter or antimatter have negative mass, or the old Unobtanium joke since there is currently no known way to have negative mass.

No, you're completely wrong. This is the ONLY thread I've ever seen of this mod where people DISLIKE it, any thread before this has been full of "omg its so amazing!!!"
I always thought the man threw himself off a cliff at the end.
The visuals of the game were pretty nice, I gotta say.
But the story itself was confusing as fuck, to me.
People need to understand that the story is supposed to be incoherent.
The idea is for you to think about it and come up with your own conclusion afterwords.
The simple fact that you didn't understand the story doesn't make it a bad story.
Anyway it was a great mod, just the mapping and the level design were pretty awful. It's a shame such a great narrative was bogged down by such poor game design. In any case the remake should be amazing, I can't wait.
bit slow, but the music was nice. you can download the soundtrack from the moddb page.

I don't really care which one of those it is, it's a pretty awesome name unless it means that his name is Theodore and he was born in 1989.
Please tell me if I interpreted your name wrong, TH89!
It's one of the only games I've played that had a story being told all the way through it and it had such beautiful music that really caught my attention. It's not like most mods that I've played.

Though I do agree somewhat with this.
My explanation for the contrast in people's opinions about this mod:
Science and art are normal to each other forming something like the complex plane. The experience in one of them wouldn't be useful in the other one. Purely scientific and logic analysis are unable to evaluate anything art related just like purely artistic experience would never help in solving a scientific problem.
But that's not really true

I also don't really get how it pertains to someone's opinion of this mod

What I meant was that purely technical analysis of this mod (or anything art related) wouldn't help nor hinder you evaluate the art it was aiming for. The players who concentrated on expecting technical features from the mod were vastly disappointed, while the ones concerned with its atmosphere and storytelling found it unique. I don't think I was the latter though.
The mod may represent a new form of art (which I and some others failed to appreciate), but as a mod its gameplay was very dull, none in fact.
But gameplay and visuals aren't technical aspects.
Smart deep people mod
The voice-actor was amazing. He kinda sounds like an older Daniel.
I liked this mod, to me it was like an interactive poem, but more interesting due to music and visuals put together. Somehow I felt relaxed after I finished playing it.
i really want to play the remake
This mod has a lot of great qualitys that keep the player moving forward, with it's strange telling of what happened on the island that is almost a mess that leaves it open to interpretation. But there were a few problems like the odd level design that has lead me to areas that i wasn't supposed to go to (but the remake probably would fix that) and the low voice in which i had to turn the sound up. Overall, this is definately work checking out if you're into atmosphere that doesn't necessarily have the best stories of most well told stories.
TL;DR A few minor problems like odd level design in a few places and low sound on the voice, but it's atmospheric and engaging even though it's not the best told or the best story.
The version that's out = 7/10
