Are you serious?!
This is ridiculous! I mean, first of all, it's a singleplayer mod, not a multiplayer mod, so they're not going to be constantly updating it! Second, they hyped this a lot to make it a commercial mod. And third, they came out of the fucking nowhere with this!
It'll look pretty but be a pile o' shit
Is everybody pissed at this being a commercial mod or something? I can't even tell what's going on
Is everybody pissed at this being a commercial mod or something? I can't even tell what's going on
You can't put sparlkes on a pile of crap and expect it to be desert
[editline]13th February 2011[/editline]
But i'm not fussed over it being a commercial mod, I do have the choice to play it/download it afterall.
Considering that Robert Briscoe has put in two years of his own time to bring the original mod up to commercial standard? Not to mention that the original creator, Dan Pinchbeck, has sought out to have the music reorchestrated, the story further refined and expanded, and new narration recorded?
I enjoyed the concept of the original Dear Esther, despite the numerous flaws within the game itself. But having followed Briscoe's development blog over the past couple of years, I'm certain that the redeveloped version will be worth the commercial release. They deserve every cent of their time on this remake.
You folks have to remember, the mod you experienced is NOT the mod that is getting the commercial release. Don't knock the new one until you've tried it.
Plus Briscoe is a professional game developer, if I was a career developer and had the chance to sell my own game I'd be all over it. Great resume material.
How come I can only find soundtrack and a PDF file on moddb?
[editline]13th February 2011[/editline]
Downloading it off filefront/gamefront instead

You know... There are people who would consider crap desert.

I agree with this.
If I ran into a job interveiw and could boast "I have a game that sold a few thousand copies" I bet that guy would rather hire me than the developer who has a calculator in his portfolio.
Just finished the mod for the first time. I really did enjoy it, although I'm still very confused over some parts. I must say, that I was also very creeped out in some areas, mainly when you first enter the caves, and the [sp]music becomes distorted.[/sp]
I think the remake just got released
http://www.moddb.com/mods/dear-esther
but what's this desaru thing
I just get circular links

http://www.desura.com/mods/dear-esther/news/dear-esther-out-now-on-desura
then click download now and get this

http://www.desura.com/mods/dear-esther/play
[editline]17th February 2011[/editline]
and then you install desura, which at this point is NOT a virus!!!
Apparently it's not the new one uhhh that was rather misleading.
The moddb page even had the release date changed to say today, and that article had a video of the new version attached to that release article.
Fuck you Desura
It should've been obvious that it was the old one, it was like a 200mb download
installing the game now, which at this point I think is the 09 version and not the remake but time will tell!
[editline]17th February 2011[/editline]
yeah it's not the new one man fuck oh well rate me optimistic
The desura website is really nice looking
Couldn't get into Dear Esther, the remake looks more promising. I'll play it mostly for checking out the amazing visuals I've seen so far.
I'm a giant vagina, I couldn't finish it it after a week because of the black shadowy figure that just fucking STOOD there. :ohdear:

Woah, I didn't know there was anything like that in this game. I thought it was just an exploration mod.
This hasn't been updated for quite some time. So here's a bunch of "new" pics and concept art.

Also, there are some plans for a limited box release
Experimental indie game Dear Esther could well be getting a limited edition boxed release, in addition to its release via digital download.
Designer Dan Pinchbeck has been chatting to BeefJack about what this proposed limited edition would include, and wants to know what you lot – yes, you lot - think of it as an idea.
“We’re thinking at the moment about a limited edition hard copy as well – with a gatefold sleeve, an exclusive version of the game with some unique additional script in it, an audio CD of the soundtrack at non-game compression, some Ben Andrews’ concept art – because he’s a star too – and a storyform version of the game as a kind of short novelette,” he explained. “Something for the hardcore fans, which would be more expensive, but have all this exclusive stuff on it. So we really want to hear what people think about that idea, whether it’s worth doing.”
source
and a couple of words on the pricing
There’s been a lot of talk in the indie gaming community about how much Dear Esther will cost. Many feel that a 60-90-minute game isn’t worth all that much; others think if it’s good enough, then it’s worth a decent number of coins.
thechineseroom have already spoken openly of how they want to keep the price as low as possible, but now we have more of an idea. Says Dan Pinchbeck: “My rule of thumb is, ‘same as a pack of cigarettes, a cinema ticket, a round of drinks.’ I hope we bring it in under $10, I think that’d be a fair price.”
I can't wait for this mod.
As you've added a lot of content this bump is allowed - however when a thread has been dead for over three months it's generally better to make a new one.
Looks like they're trying to get it released for the end of summer.
If they can't, it'll be definetly released on December
I'm so buying their remake!
I never played the original, but apparently it's getting a remake with some of the most gorgeous graphics in Source (the guy who's working on it is one of Mirror's Edge level designers at DICE):
