i heard the mod was really bad.
You're hearing things. Well, I can agree abou the first one, because visuals are awful. But this remake has its story extended and I think it's enough to see those videos to know how awesome those visuals are. I really don't get it. People complain about it saying it's a "bad/boring mod" because they don't even read its description. I don't know what the hell that people expect from a first-person-tale, action, shootin' aliens? NO! This mod became into a standalone game and I seriously recommend it. It won't cost more than $10.
It was okay. The story was kinda hard to get into, not to mention it was hard to focus on he story due to some poor level design. When you get lost, you can't even continue the plot. Oh and the girl civilian scared the fucking shit out of me. I stopped playing the first time I saw it. [editline]4th July 2011[/editline]
You're hearing things. I guess if you were to REALLY listen to the cryptic story (which, and I never thought this would happen, was difficult to follow because of the accent. only occasionally, and try to take in the outdated visuals (which only slightly ruin the immersion, however nice the mountains are). [editline]4th July 2011[/editline]
As you've added a lot of content this bump is allowed - however when a thread has been dead for over three months it's generally better to make a new one.
:geno: um [editline]4th July 2011[/editline]
sexy
See, now THAT looks fucking amazing. That looks immersive.

It will be much MUCH better than that first mod.
I sent the composer of the music a email about 6 months ago, and she told me she was re scoring the music and when the new version of it gets released she would send me the piano sheet music.
Those electrical diagrams you see painted on the rock represent the anti-lock brakes, while the chemical diagrams represent the alcohol, both responsible for the car accident that killed Esther. At least that's how I think.
Maybe there was an alcohol one, but I was looking at what I know are DNA helixes and nucleotide bases(part of dna).
Maybe there was an alcohol one, but I was looking at what I know are DNA helixes and nucleotide bases(part of dna).
i've always thought that there was something really important written on the walls, but you'd need a phd in quantum physics to understand it. like the entire story explained through a diagram of a klein bottle.
Hell, I'd buy this for ten dollars.
Hell, I'd buy this for ten dollars.
i'd only buy it to uninstall it.
It's going to cost? Fuck that shit
i'd only buy it to uninstall it.
HAHAHAHAHAH oh wait that was stupid
I found it terrifying. I must say - I actually set sv_cheats to 1, and put god 1 on. Maybe If I had a gun I'd feel less terrified. After all… "who needs courage when you have a gun?" Is the game scary, does it have screamers?
Is the game scary, does it have screamers?
From memory, no. No cheap scares.
This is the story of my life c:
From memory, no. No cheap scares.
Only part of the game I found scary was that weird sound you sometimes hear in the caves, like someone having their innards sucked out with a straw. :ohdear: [editline]7th July 2011[/editline]
This is the story of my life c:
come back
I remember seeing a video about this mod. It looks nice, that's about it.
I played it a few months ago. I could stomach the slowness without much trouble, but I accidentally performed a sequence break a few times. I have to say, like everyone else, the caves were the best part. I was sort of disappointed at the end, though. I was climbing the cliffs, and it was coming to a climax, then nothing.
This mod should have been a puzzle game or something.
is esther good looking?
It's still hard to believe it's source
I just remembered that this is going to be a game and not a mod.
oh man, PAYING for a VIDEO GAME???? so absurd
I don't see why people keep complaining about buying this. It'll be like $2.50 anyway. And it is visually amazing.

So wait, I have to pay, for a mod!? Seriously, it sucked when Dino D-day did it, and it will suck here too! Not everyone has infinitely deep pockets of disposable income! Besides, the game is far to pretentious to warrant any sort of monetary value, regardless of how good it looks. I mean, it acts like the story is deep and means shit, but really it doesn't. It's a puzzle game where the only puzzle is trying to figure out what the fuck the plot means. I like plots that make you think and aren't blatantly out there, but it completely neglects to inform you of any main plot elements in a coherent manner. It was kinda cool to play, but fuck them if they think I'm paying for a mod. Maybe if it was a full-fledged, 10 hour game, but the original didn't last me more than about an hour. And to count as an actual game, it would have to add just more than visuals. It's the same argument I use when people bring up Halo: Anniversary Edition. I'm not paying any price for a game I already own just because it looks nicer! Never, ever, ever. And anyone who does, well, their just a fucking idiot with way to much goddamn money. Edit: My case an point is it's not a new game, it's still only a mod. It doesn't the core game files, doesn't add anything new Gameplay wise, and is only a graphical upgrade. It's like me trying to sell my HL2 texture pack.
It's being remastered by various professionals, and was first made by various professionals in the industry who Dan paid out of pocket to help him, and then released it for free. They deserve to get paid for their work, why should Robert spend a good 2 years of his life on something and not get paid for it? Why should Dan Pinchbeck not get some income in order to keep experimenting, do research, and potentially create more great new games like Dear Esther or Conscientious Objector? You can't spend 10 (probably way less) bucks on some indie-game that's quite an incredible piece of art and not the same old rehashed milking cow made by Craptivision or EA? Then don't buy it you cheap bastard, nobodies forcing you to. Meanwhile I'll gladly support the developers for the little sum they ask for, because I enjoyed the game. Different strokes for different folks I guess, but your core argument is incredibly moot. If you don't like obscurity in literature or stories, fine. Some people do, though. And many have used it for fantastic story telling marvels. (see: Roadside Picnic) You obviously are afraid to think and interpret something on your own, or, on the contrary, just accept things for what they are. It's really what DE is all about.

However I wanted to list the exception you made in your post: Dino D Day is terrible. You can't compare something like that to what Dear Esther is doing.

The original Dear Esther was university funded. It was a study, and a sort of challenge to the gaming industry. What actually makes a game? How far can you strip a game of its conventional gameplay mechanics? Is it possible to create a game that relies almost entirely on storytelling? The updated Dear Esther isn't simply going to be the original game with a fresh coat of paint. It has been nearly entirely rebuilt from scratch by Robert Briscoe, who originally started remaking the original of his own accord, in his own time. The storyline has been refined, added to, and even changed to an extent. Existing narration has been cleaned up, and new narration is being recorded. Music is being performed by a real live orchestra. If you don't want to pay $10 for their work, good for you. No-one cares.
Robert stated on his Twitter that this game is just about ready for beta testing. http://twitter.com/#!/RobertBriscoe
