Maybe because it was leaked, and most of the content wasn't even going to be in the game, and the playable parts of it turned into the game we love and know?
Alot of stuff just was taken off because of the leak. They had to change it.
Alot of stuff just was taken off because of the leak. They had to change it.
Untrue. In fact, if you played the leak, you'd notice a number of maps are simply very early versions of Half-Life 2 maps.
you could wait for gabeN but that will never be released.
it WILL be released, and when it is, you'll cream your pants
it WILL be released, and when it is, you'll cream your pants
It won't.
it WILL be released, and when it is, you'll cream your pants
BMS will beat gabeN in release dates.
You can get the GabeN beta, only that GabeNet is down this time and we can't get it haha. Reason? http://www.slkandy.com/beta/index.php
gabenet is pretty dumb anyways. "lets make a secure distribution to prevent leaks of our game that is based on a leaked game." besides, you have to forward ports and shit.
If it was that playable they'd have released it.
The beta could be played, but most of the maps had to be loaded through the console. If you chose a map through the main menu, the game went into multiplayer mode, and was filled with problems. There were some early versions of modern maps in the beta, and a few that were totally different than anything in the final. The devtest map was really neat, and showed pretty much everything that could;ve been in HL2. Overall, though, I liked the beta map pack more than the beta game, but the game itself was still neat when you could get things working.
Sadly, I can't find the WC mappack. On the wiki it said "Here you can get the mappack." Me: "Where the fuck is the link?"
I found the WCMappack on one russian HL2 Beta modding site. I cant find it now, probably valve got their dirty bureaucratic hands on it

Wow the Hydra Map ain't that big...Not much to do but see a combine get raped by a giant tenactle

And even some parts of the game are the same as in the beta and E3 movies. The last part in traptown where he shoots the barrel and the zombies start catching fire is the part where you get off the lift after gregori gives you the shotgun. And some stuff from the beta is showing up now in some eps, recycled in some stuff.
It's OK, he comes from this new age of Fileplanet 'betas' that all the kids with paid subscriptions are into now. The thought that a beta could come from anywhere else and be anything but playable and an accurate rendition of the final product scares and infuriates him.
Betas usually are accurate renditions of the final product. You're thinking of alphas, and this "beta" is not even at that stage. So stop thinking that "beta" is a catch-all phrase for an unreleased product.
HL2 beta is interesting if you're interested in the history of the game and like seeing things made by Valve.
