Music games are actually very quickly dying out. All the peripherals take up space and are too expensive. I'm not complaining though.
I'd have to say horror games. Name one good and actually scary horror game what was recently released (other than amnesia the dark descent)...Well ? "Durrr...Dead space" No. Dead space is a action game with some horror elements.
I miss point and click games.
Toejam & earl it has a mint soundtrack.
http://vip.aersia.net/vip.swf The toejam and early songs on there somewhere, awesome fucking game.
I don't know what you'd call em, but games like Evil Genius, Startopia, and Dungeon Keeper, are extremely rare. Also RTS/RPG hybrids, like Mount & Blade, and Kingdom Under Fire are rare.
actually the only life sim is The Sims if Im correct.Racing games are dieing NFS and GT5 and Forza dont get made as much as say other genres so its kinda lowering it numbers. After NFS Underground back in the day it got lower and lower in the number they popped up
art games
Bullshit flight sims aren't dying, I've been a part of most of the large fligh simming communities for 10 years now and they aren't getting smaller they are growing larger and larger every year
You terrestrial aeronauts have it good. :( [editline]8th December 2010[/editline] I wonder why the EA store isn't having any sales, EA store is awesome and last time they got me hooked on Mass Effect for like 4-5 usd or something.

i would like games like doom 1-2 and quake 1 to come back
Puzzle adventures. No, Portal isn't a puzzle adventure. More like puzzle action adventure.
Puzzlers, Point and Click, Stealth, Realistic Fps, Flight Sim, God Sim, Base Sim, Tycoon Sim, Complex RTS, Arcade style sports/lightgun/etc. Generally Simulators are going down the drain (Remember when at one stage there was a simulator for nearly everything?), point and click is being kept alive through Sam and Max but just barely, I have never heard anyone buying a lightgun game anymore and Stealth is really just tacked on to portions in games rather then being a full genre.

They just get shittier and shittier so you never really hear about them.
I haven't seen that many turn based tactic games like Jagged Alliance and XCOM.
Text based games.
City simulations. SimCity 5, anyone? None of this Societies crap.
Sidescrolling platformers. I don't care if 3D platformers are better, I get my jizz on when I hear there will be a new sidescroller from a game that has had too many 3D titles. I need to get myself a Wii :smithicide:
Remember those old shooters? Nothing like these current day "tacticool gunz" shooters with the gritty graphics and pansy girly "regenerating health" The good old shooters like unreal tournament, where if someone shot you with a rocket launcher, you turn around and sent one right back at the bastard. Games where you ran people over in cars and watched as they dissembled into their composite parts and someone over the tannoy would announce very loudly that A: you did so and B: it was awesome. Where the guns would be anything from bog standard pistols to whopping great photon annihilators with everything conceivable in between. These days a game will rub some military hardware in your face that's covered with dust and say "look how cool and realistic it is! It's the best gun ever!" or as, Yatzee quite rightly put it just, show you some shiny asult rifle with some kind of attachent and say "PWOOOAH" I miss the old shooters where you could carry every gun in the game with you and it wasn't about who was a high enough level to have said cool guns but more about who found them or who knew how use these guns correctly. Remember in the old UT games where people would use anything from the flak cannon to the shock rifle to the lightning gun. The game was quick, over the top and the gore was so excessive that it was borderline stupid and impossible to take seriously. And most importantly of all... score could got to shit, it was about how much fun you had in the middle.
Dance Games :saddowns:
Scrollers.
Although it never really went anywhere in the first place, the few 'RTS/FPS' games were really fun.
Tactical Shooters. Mainly Raven Shield style where you had a planning phase, remember that? Where you spent ages agonising over every aspect of the mission before you even got to shooting anybody, setting up their waypoints and hold codes to get multiple simultaneous breaches? On top of that you don't even have to play just setup your plan and let the AI loose. Nothing really comes close, vegas just felt like a generic shooter with a cover system and as much as I love ARMA I can't deny that its nigh impossible to fight in buildings effectively.
Stealth like Janus said and good horror games. Monsters jumping out of small areas does not classify as a good horror game.
Frictional Games makes pretty damn good horror games [editline]8th December 2010[/editline]
I'd have to say horror games. God I miss stealth games so much
I can't help feeling side scrolling shooters are dead. Things like Metal Slug and Contra are extremely few and far between. Shame, I likedthem due to their obscene difficulties at times.
I can agree with stealth, the last good one was Splinter Cell Conviction with no others in sight for a while.
Conviction? Splinter Cell died after Double Agent, reaching it's climax before with Chaos Theory.
Platformers At least it feel's like it
Its not that long since super meat boy was released, but yeah, other than that, there's barely any.
Racing Games. Sure they come out, but does anyone ever play them? FPS's are all the rage and I don't approve. :colbert:
I dont really care that much about Racing games, i dont really know why, but i never liked them much. Also, i love FPS's, i just hate all the generic modern warfare ripoffs that has been airing recently, i want games like Quake and Unreal Tournament, Half Life, and Tribes, and what about some FPS's that are actually tactical? Like the Swat games, and the old Rainbow Six games? Why are there no more games like those?
Remember those old shooters? Other than that, god games are pretty much entirely dead, infact they have been mostly dead for a long while, i just hope From Dust will be good. Also, Actual stealth games are dead, the only good RTS that has been released within the last year is Starcraft 2, the only good TBS that has been released within a long while is CIV 5, and it was not really that good or anything, i mean, it had just been so simplified and watered down, i would definetly recomend it to someone new to the TBS genre, but otherwise not that great. And real goddamn RPG's, since Dragonage Origins there's barely been any that were any good, atleast not as far as i know. Lastly,
Turned Based Strategy (See Silent Storm)
That game is more like a Turn Based RPG, but yeah, those are also dead.
Zfps games (ie. Tribes, Tibes 2, Fallen Empires, the latest one being Global Agenda after about 4 years of no other zfpses....)
City simulations. SimCity 5, anyone? None of this Societies crap.
Apparently the Cities series is pretty good, you can make some really detailed and intricate metropolises. http://store.steampowered.com/app/58510/
