It could have been a lot worse. Sure the engine today is fairly dated but it's so flexible and it's been used for so many games and other projects. Still, it couldn't hurt for Valve to start putting some effort into a new engine instead of re-using source to shit.
Yeah, there's alot of things that can be done for the source engine. Like staring to replace the shadow shaders with something different than the flashlight shaders. It looks fucking horrible when objects overlay one-another in the source engine because of the fact that the shadows also overlap due to them being based off of the original flashlight code. Oh well, we can all just wait in anticipation for the source 2 engine.
Why exactly are you doing this? I know what I'm talking about, thanks for the boxes.
No box for you. I'm just saying that at least half of people posting here doesn't even know what a Game Engine is. "CryEngine 3 have a pretty witty trees that's why UnrealEngine 3 sux!!!1111oneone", making me rage.

Gamebryo.
but it's the one of the best Engines IMO.
Couldn't agree more
Yeah, that's why some of the most influential games ever were powered by them.
UE was okay for UT games. It's not okay for like 30 shit games made by devs who couldn't be bothered making an engine for their own series of games. Instead we take the UE smack it into our generic shooter game. Now don't get me wrong. The UE engine is fantastic for shooter games like Gears of War,but for the love of god, every game that uses this engine has the same stupid characteristics over it. I NEVER rate a game that uses a premade engine for their games over 4 out of 10.
How about "The Last Remnant" or MMO "Aion" ?
I have played neither of them so I won't comment on how well they have modified the UE to fit in a RPG universe. But I hope for their own sake that they have.
Please explain.
I mean the game was excellent but for 1997 graphics it could've been a much better presented game and would've lived on as a classic, now its just dead and forgotten even Populous used graphics ahead of its time and it was made 10 years before fallout Doom 3 engine has been used in ETQW and the new Wolfenstein game they didn't succeed greatly with the graphics...

That feature only good for FPS's i admit.
You're an idiot.
lol don't even try it gayneric you just look more of a twat like that...

Source Engine will Evolve, they won't replace it, because Half Life 2 still has some bit of John Carmack's Quake engine in it. Quake Evolved into GoldSrc, which evolved into Source, and that has been modified heavily over the years to what we now know as the Left 4 Dead version of Source.
Splintercell and hitman blood money?(I am unsure but I think it had one characteristic that makes me think it was unreal)
hitman blood money (and all the other hitman games) used the Glacier engine. edit: splinter cell uses unreal engine 2.0, unreal engine 2.5, and modified versions of those depending on which game.
source engine./
Unreal engine is really great and looks today outdated but I love it and also Source Engine is kickass, totally moddable and stable and optimized, :buddy: Can't stand people bitching it.
Half Life 2 still has some bit of John Carmack's Quake engine in it.
i heard that from some places others i heard that any traces of the original quake engine had been rewritten or something

The HAVOK engine Saints Row 2 used, it's shit.
HAVOK is a physics engine Source uses HAVOK. modified HAVOK, but still HAVOK. [editline]01:36PM[/editline] saints row 2 used a custom in-house engine (wiki doesn't say the name of it) with HAVOK physics

ETQW failed because it wasn't that good of a game, not because of the graphics. Look at fucking CS 1.6 for jesus' sake.
ETQW wasn't bad for a start, and it didn't fail, there's still a community for it.
How the fuck is Fallout not a classic?
this
CryEngine 3. Making games look worse is advancing an engine, when you already have the most graphically advanced engine in gaming?
Uhh It looks only worse when running on consoles and even then it's the best out there. And it features more optimized rendering (being able to have near infinite lights+shadows in a scene with no slowdown, streaming levels, etc). It's hardly worse.
the only engine i can say that failed is Gamebryo seriously Bethsoft, that's the best you could do?
