Either I'm stupid or immature but I had more fun doing my US History test today then I had trying to learn how to play this game. [editline]09:04PM[/editline] Like seriously the past week I have tried to enjoy this thing (I wont call it a game because it seems more like something aliens with overtly complex brain structures masturbate to or something) but I have yet to grasp any of it.
I gave you an empty box to collect your thoughts in.
Today, I decided to bite the bullet and learn how to play the game. It's coming along easier than I thought, I made an underground cave, some stairs, a farm, a food storage, a carpenter, and I gathered wood! :v:

Question time: Round 2! 1. My people keep going insane. Generally the weavers/clothiers. Why and how do I stop this? 2. Will digging a channel into a mountain make the land under the mountain arable for mushrooms? 3. How do I kill kolbold thieves? 4. How fast does fortress mode go from easy to hard? So far it's pretty slow. 5. What do I need to start metal crafting? 6. I want to get the new version but keep my pretty tileset. How do I do this?
Are you sure you are using Teamspeak 3.0? Are you sure the addres is right? Are you sure the port is right?
Oh. Teamspeak. :v:

Are they getting moods, if they are check what they need. If not check their profiles and see if they are unhappy. 3. Position a military or a wardog near the entrance of your fort. 5. Anvil, some sort of fuel (either magma or charcoal), and a magmaforge or forge.
1. My people keep going insane. Generally the weavers/clothiers. Why and how do I stop this?
Do you mean they go into a mood as in a "possessed" or "fey mood" or do they just throw temper tantrums?
2. Will digging a channel into a mountain make the land under the mountain arable for mushrooms?
The water needs to directly flow over the tiles to make them muddy, but you shouldn't have to do that. Just dig into the soil layer (there has to be some on your map, you can't start on mountain tiles alone) and build your farms there.
3. How do I kill kolbold thieves?
Traps will catch them while they're still invisible, and wooden cage traps are easy to build early on, and dogs are pretty good at chasing them down after they've been noticed. If neither of those is an option, just ignore them. They're not much more than a nuisance unless you've got lots of valuable stuff.
4. How fast does fortress mode go from easy to hard? So far it's pretty slow.
The difficulty will pick up when your population starts increasing and goblins start attacking in groups. It's never too early to start building defenses. Even if you don't have a military, you can at least build doors to every fortress entrance and lock the goblins out when they attack (I don't know about the new version, but locking goblins out only worked in the first few attacks in the last version, [sp]before they started bringing trolls, which can knock down doors[/sp].
5. What do I need to start metal crafting?
First you need metal ore. It'll usually have a pound symbol when in the ground, and all metal ore will be a star shape when dug out, instead of the round shape that regular stones have. Then you need a wood furnace and a dwarf with the wood burner skill (to make charcoal out of lumber), a smelter and a dwarf with the furnace operator skill (to melt down metal ore), and a metal forge and a dwarf with the weaponsmithing, armoring, metalcrafting, or blacksmithing skills to make stuff out of the metal. It looks like a complicated process, but it's pretty simple once you've started doing it.
Damn arena mode is awesome, im going to have a royal rumble to determine the king of beasts Fighters: Elephant, hydra, dragon, titan,HOLY SHIT ITS BATMAN!,Tenticle demon, werewolf, yeti,Orc, and unicorn. Winner=bronze colossus (wasent on list but i desided to add him right before it started.
Thanks for the answers. The issue is that all my locations have no underground soil, only gabbro. The only soil is on the surface.

I could run the last version at a steady 120 fps and this one doesn't go past 50 and my caps 120, anyone know why it could be running so slow? It's also taking up 5 times the original memory.
OK new problems after checking the thoughts of my people. Most of them are content but complain about the same things: Poor water quality and the same old booze. I can understand the booze problem as I only produce strawberry wine for my dwarfs and know of no other alcohol plant. How do I "clean" the water? Most of them are really thirsty and I may have a pandemic of madness soon enough.
My soldiers won't take any weapons even though I've assigned them battle axes and have a bunch in a stockpile next to them. What could I be doing wrong? Apparently I need an arsenal dwarf. Thanks Thorny.
wait the bronze colossus just was melted by dragons but ill try it again

Are you sure you're not mixing them with goblin thieves? Goblins in general can't avoid traps.
Put soap in the water.
You're joking right?
My swordsdwarf won't drop his training sword for an iron sword, even though I changed his equip settings. wtf?
You're joking right?
It either means they're cleaning themselves with water only and they want soap, or they need better drinkable water. Bad drinkable water comes from murky pools, underground lakes and all that where the water just stands still. Good water are the brooks, rivers, so on. I think a well makes every kind of water drinkable.
tried again and dragon won. batman melted. NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
Fucking caverns :v: The one time I put traps at the main entrance and swarms of troglodytes come swarming in from the cavern. At least my dog put up a good fight, losing 3 limbs, both his eyes and being in extreme pain all the time :v: Also, rain irrigation is the best irrigation. Dig hole in ceiling = profit.
Thanks for the answers. The issue is that all my locations have no underground soil, only gabbro. The only soil is on the surface.
well next time try to start somewhere that has some. Soil is also good for building storage areas because you don't have to move stones out of the way before storing stuff there. [editline]04:11PM[/editline] ugh there are even more aquifers then before. Some worlds are almost totally covered by them
My people have issues with the drinking water. Where do I build a well, and will it interrupt my underground base in future?
I can't wait until the OpenGL version is released. 2010 is having major FPS issues.
My people have issues with the drinking water. It shouldn't interrupt anything provided you plan around that little hole you'll have for the well.
I changed my squad settings, and my dwarf won't drop his wooden sword, I gave him orders to pick up an iron sword.
Made this. It's not top quality but.....

On the background is an engraving of a dwarf in grey and white pixels. The dwarf is mining.
