is your guy equipped?
is the labor turned on?
are there animals?
how do I get them to use a weapon?
[editline]03:23AM[/editline]
a ranger has the labor, a steel crossbow, and I gave hunters bolts in the military screen, he's just standing there though.
how do I get them to use a weapon?
Your hunter should normally equip a weapon when it's available. Otherwise, fiddle around with the military menu, like what I'm doing now
oh fuck a metalsmith went into a fey mood, took a metalsmith's shop, and is now asking for rock bars and bodyparts.
currently doing a fuck around fortress 65 z-levels down in a cave on a terrifying glacier
somehow it's doing perfectly fine, I have a decent military getting started but making the cave safe was rough, already have four champions with no barracks whatsoever because they wrestled so much shit to death
there were a bunch of injuries, but thanks to the new medical system and how I got two more doctors in my first immigrant wave, there's only a few still in bed rest.
only bad injury other than that was a poor leatherworker who had his hand completely torn off by a rutherer, so I gave him the title "the claw".
somehow he's still an "accomplished leatherworker", so I have him make leather out of the countless cave monsters that try to attack
honestly I was expecting to get wrecked by invincible skeletons but this is the best fortress (well actually it's more like a glorified cave) I've had yet in the new version.
I'll make sure to update on the hilarious downfall of the fortress, because this is honestly going too well for it to last
gonna guess it'll be a forgotten beast attack, I set the demon type count to 1000 anyway
or blizzard men, those guys can wreck shit up
either find a way to get those, lock him inside, or get it by trade
also I think you equip him with a weapon by the military screen. but i haven't played DF 2010 fortress mode yet. just been fucking around in the object testing mode
[editline]11:28PM[/editline]
also it sounds like immigrants come pretty skilled. is that true?
Gee. I have my militia commander and three soldiers in his squad sitting in the barracks. The militia commander has been sitting in place "Organizing Combat Training" while the other three sit in place "Waiting for Combat Training."
Aghhhh. Why won't they train? I've had to save scum three times now. If they can't train a bit before the goblins arrive i'm screwed for this fort.
So I just tried to drown my fort by unleashing the power of the ocean upon them.
They died of thirst before the water even reached them.

yeah you'll get some pretty good immigrants sometimes
or immigrants that can do more than one thing, I had a grand master soaper who was also an accomplished mechanic arrive once, was pretty good for cleaning patients and setting up traps
ugh toady is devoting more and more processor power to dumb crap that no one cares about. focus on making your game more playable instead of adding dumb crap like calculated dwarf beards
Motherfucker. I got a shitload ton of gold and silver but no fish or any other butcherable animals other than a giant eagle

having the exact problem.

great, one just succumbed to melancholy
Could someone explain the new underground farming system to me?
Could someone explain the new underground farming system to me?
you need muddy ground to make a farm plot
either wet the ground (a screw pump from a stream will work), drain a murky pool, or just find a clearing in an underground cave, caves always have muddy grounds
now I'm not sure but apparently it's slightly bugged and above ground farms don't work well yet
it's actually pretty simple

The fact that you can't build a farm on a soil layer is also a bug.
my military must be training, my miltia commander is good with armor and dodging/fighting, but they're always waiting
Try 2 per year, if not more. :ohdear:

1000+ years of him waging war against Elves

452 kills to his name.

So I just tried to drown my fort by unleashing the power of the ocean upon them.

I tried flooding the underground chambers in the arena.
Stupid water didn't want to flow away from the wall I made :saddowns:
FUCK YEAH migrants
[editline]04:06AM[/editline]
shit, they're bringing a lot of cats.
oh well, more meat.
[editline]04:10AM[/editline]
I have an insane dwarf who hangs around the chains in the dungeon, he's creepy.
[editline]04:12AM[/editline]
he died the way he lived, by the chains
I can't find any enemies or caves in adventure mode. I wander around aimlessly but fail to find even a wolf. What the hell. Why can't I have fun?
I just started a fort, made a shaft that went all the way down to a flooded cavern some 60 z-levels below, made a bridge and dropped all of my dwarves but one down it.

I posted again. At the beginning he killed a lot of elves, but then spent a lot of time in hibernation, gaining the worship of humans. My bad. :v:
When the less buggy version comes out, I'm definitely going to make the only entrance to my fort a Bridge of Khazad Dum style (1 tile wide, nothing but 100 layers down.)
Don't know if this is a new feature but you can build farm plots over 1/7 water, So no waiting for it to dry.
why won't my dwarves kill this elf? they just stand around it with "kill elf" but just watch him at the trade depot
Oh. Wow.
I couldn't get my dwarves to train. There were 15+ goblins waiting outside my drawbridge, standing amidst a bunch of migrant bodies they had just massacred, including a child. I decided that my squad had gathered enough, even without training. I opened the drawbridge, and a straight out brawl starts.
My commander sort of tanks it out, with his steel breastplate and iron helm/greaves taking a ton of hits from the bowmen with little damage. My men massacre the bow squad that they hit first, and I have a recruit with a pick get a kill, and one axedwarf beheads one, chops another in half, and hurts another before my spearman finishes it.
Then the axe goblins arrive. My best fighter, my axedwarf, is instantly beheaded in the charge. My speardwarf's lungs are crushed. My militia commander is beheaded. My swordsdwarf, wrestler, and recruit, (all armed with picks, curiously, need to stop letting them choose their own weapons) come back from chasing down the last bowgoblin. The recruit almost instantly gets his pick stuck in the now-shattered skull of a goblin axeman, my swordsdwarf cuts off a leg of another one who then starts trying to run away. Then more bad news- an axegoblin chops off the right, pick-holding arm of my swordsdwarf (disarmed tee hee). Then, to my amazement...he picks up the pick with his left arm, and keeps fighting, getting his pick stuck in the leg of another axegoblin who's then killed by my recruit.
Now all that is left is a goblin axeman bleeding out, crawling away with just one leg, and a bowman, clashing with with a bull calf somewhere on the other side of the map.
Truly a heroic victory. They're resting up in the hospital now, I really hope they survive.

Trade Depots are holy ground for Dwarves.
In the mean-time, they'll stare at the Elf in impotent rage.

Whut.
why won't my dwarves kill this elf? they just stand around it with "kill elf" but just watch him at the trade depot
Kill orders function more like follow orders than direct commands. They won't attack something that they wouldn't normally already.
why won't my dwarves kill this elf? they just stand around it with "kill elf" but just watch him at the trade depot
try ordering them to "station" near the elf, then try giving them a kill order again
some more buggy shit with orders, it happens sometimes
oh hey and elves don't care if you seize all their shit, they'll just come back next year with more shit to seize
wow some goblins just owned my whole military
Whut.
Bleh, axegoblin, sorry. Couldn't fill that one in yourself?
And of course one of my recruits chased down the legless goblin and was then chopped in half. Hnnng.
