Still trying to work out how to irrigate farms. Apparently I need a mechanic to make the levers for a floodgate. But I don't have a mechanic and I have no idea how to assign one of my current Dorfs as one.
Story time. Fort was going well, 10 dwarfs because I got 3 migrants, one was a child. I had a great structure going, but then we broke a cave which was connected to HFS and beyond. Damn our luck, we sealed off all we could, the fort was ransacked, they are everywhere, only two dwarfs made it out of the fort in time to wall it off from the world, inside is a child, the 7 other dwarfs (both migrants) are dead from trying to hold the tunnels while the others escaped. The two outside have enough supplys to start a small camp while the child is locked in the messhall/housing district. The two have an axe and a pick, but there is no way to get to the child with out breaching other tunnels, once the child grows up I am going to try to get him to pull the sewage back-up lever to release the flow from the water storage tanks, maybe it will allow him to break out from the fort through the pipes, no demons are in the pipes for some reason, they are wandering around slaying puppies and things, hopefully this kid will do some work and hopefully those 30 units of drink and 10 units of plant/meat (20 total) will keep him alive, the two outside have a shallow cave dug into the side of a hill with a still, 5 meat and 5 fish, and 4 drink, it is almost time for a caravan too! They are pumping a few wood crafts to get some drink and food.
Hey, has anyone had trouble with windmills? I had two on my current fortress until they suddenly disappeared. They're definitely still there, because the area comes up as blocked if I try to place more.
[q]uery it. The dwarf's demand style will be different depending on the mood, but the wiki article should help some. As far as I've seen, the 40d demands are the same as DF2010's, a few may be different. Clicky.
Thanks man, much appreciated. My second fortress crumbled today. Goblins ambushed us, those caught outside were killed, as they refused to come inside and more were making their way to the doors (Which I quickly locked). My military consisted of a team of wrestlers at that point, so the following fight was extremely messy. One wrestler bled out almost instantly (All goblins were using bows, except one), some others badly wounded. One hammerdwarf (Who then became a wrestler) managed to beat a goblin to death, then strangle another. In the end, even with two new recruits helping out, the hammerdwarf was the only one to survive. 7 dwarves died that day... Then, as we attempted to recover, not only did we have to deal with tantrums, but a second band of goblins appeared. I tried to recall the dwarves outside this time, but they seemed to run out anyway, possibly to get their fallen brethren. I had to lock the gates again, but this time, over 20 were killed outside. And I had no military to fight them, so I had to abandon.
Well my military of ten competent dwarves has been trying to kill this giant olm for about an hour now
Well my military of ten competent dwarves has been trying to kill this giant olm for about an hour now
Try to kill 6 goblins
God damn. My hunter gets himself mauled by wolves, and is bedridden for a good 3 seasons. While trying to fill up a bucket to get him some water, one dwarf falls into the raging stream and gets crushed up against the rocks, filling the river with blood, and another dwarf falls in and drowns. FUCK
I'm trying out the new version for the first time. My fortress is in a nice, temperate area, only there is one strange thing about it: The mountains to the East are practically a wall. I'm serious, we're talking +22 levels of almost perfect straightness, and the mountain isn't jagged, oh no, it's perfectly straight, from the north of the map all the way to the south. It takes up roughly 25% of the entire map. The best comparison I can imagine would be a glacial wall, only made out of stone, platinum, and hematite. (PS: How do you get Reveal to work on this version? I want to look for Bituminous Coal, nothing more.)
I stole about 200 animals from the elves and threw them down a pit. Now I have 8000 units of meat. This is what the surface looks like after they return to put all the useless bits on the refuse pile.
Oh christ what is going on with FP. New posts being put above old posts etc. Anyway, hoorah for succession games. Shame that the FP ones have fallen down and died.
how to remove things? i put a bed down by accident.
how to remove things? i put a bed down by accident.
q to go into the building options menu, highlight the bed and press x. Someone will come and turn it back into the bed item.
Finally got one of my dorfs to start dabbling with mechanics so I could make a floodable underground farm and summer rolls in and all the lakes dry up. Also, there's only rock floors in my fortress. If I flood a room with a rock floor, will it get muddy and therefore allow me to grow crops?
Well I can build them but then my mason gets stuck and I have to reload the game everytime.
Stuck how? I've been building this above-ground fort for 3 years and a mason has never gotten stuck anywhere Why did my post get put above two that I've already read? Dammit garry

Oh sweet lord I just started playing. Any way to make my dorfs ignore the OH NO DAMP STONE warnings and keep digging?
Oh sweet lord I just started playing. Any way to make my dorfs ignore the OH NO DAMP STONE warnings and keep digging?
Maybe try digging a channel on the level above?
Oh shit, there's a bit of a timewarp going on.

Dammit garry
I don't know, every time I build a wall/floor it makes all colliding squares impenetrable from outside and inside until I save and reload. Even if it would work, military is useless. 15 dwarfs in full iron don't stand a chance against 6 goblins. I'm waiting for fix.

Stuff like that can be seen with on the cliff screen on the embark menu
I hope you can import saves into the update, because I'm liking how my current fortress is looking. All I want is the ability to farm on soil layers without irrigation, and the apparently crucial fix to the military.
How do I upload the save file?
Use Dropbox or http://www.mediafire.com/ .
If plaster is broken what am I supposed to do about dwarfs who have broken bones etc, they stay in bed. I also have problems with my doctors not suturing/dressing peoples wounds. I have about 5 people permanently stuck in Hospital while the doctor performs surgery which does nothing.
jesus christ I was playing at my school and I got a bronze colossus they really ARE unkillable
holy shit timewarps
why do those posts keep appearing after mine help
I've been struggling for somewhere to put my farm plots, I've just started getting into this game and I've placed my farm plots inside, on yellow sand (could this be the fatal flaw?), and none of the seeds are showing up (I want to plant plump helmets in particular). Could anyone help me please?
