Guys, this game looks good and innovative and replayable (the thing I like) but I've been afraid to try it due to the learning curve :(
The learning curve isn't as bad as you think. Once you get the hang of it, the game can be really enjoyable. In my opinion, the learning curve is worth it.
This is what happened after a long fight with vomit.

It's also the graphics that annoy me, by the looks of it I wouldn't be able to tell what the hell is going on...

Part of the learning is getting used to the graphics. Of course you could use a tileset but I've never been a fan of those. I mean, a tileset might make the game look better but it's still pretty damn basic when it comes to graphics. I'd rather have the practical clear default graphics than a tileset.

Tilesets, or get used to it. It's part of DA LERNIN' CURVE

Use the natural color scheme to make the ASCII less painful on the eyes. Makes the colors smoother and less bright.

Replace it in the init.txt file in the data/init folder.
I actually have no idea what version I'm using right now.
The rar was called df2010. It's Mayday's tileset. I went to download the latest release from Mayday's site on my laptop and it's COMPLETELY DIFFERENT.
I abandoned a fortress after making a nice little adventurer tower house, and I checked legends. Apparently, the instant I abandoned, anohter dwarven group took it. The thing is, once I looked inside via adventurer, I could find no dwarves. Only a few things marked that someone had come here after my group: the presence of Longland seeds (which I didn't take but are in the default embarkation loadout) and mutilated bodies of horses, which I also didn't bring. No dwarven bodies, though.
:ohdear:
Lucklily, I found a friendly cave swallowman who wants to join me, so we're gonna have a little look-see.
What do with all this rock?

Roflcakes it's 2010 alright, there's a burrows option there.
You stop putting it in stockpiles.
Simple as that.

Walls and swords!

But then my dorfs just leave it where it falls and I can't build anything on top of it.

I can make swords out of stone?

Why don't you just dump the stones?
[editline]04:53PM[/editline]
Yes you can make swords out of stone in the craftdwarfs workshop.
Ah crap, apparently unlocking a door to the cavern in my first trip has brought all sorts of nasties up from the depths. My cave-swallow friend died, so I took his black-cap spear (with the blood of a forgotten beast still on it) and stashed it away safely. I do not know if I should go back down there.

Designate an active zone and set it to garbage dump (make sure it's the only dump active and close to a building site, i.e a mason's workshop or an out door construction). designate all the worthless rocks for dumping (b->d). All your lazy and worthless dwarves should haul ass and haul rocks from point A to the dump. Once done, designate remove dump (b->D) on the rocks that has just been moved.
tl;dr

Chunky, you.. play df?
How do you make walls?
Sounds simple and noobish, but I just can't figure out how...

I don't have an option to designate the rocks.

b->C->w
In the previous versions you have to place walls, floors, and other constructions one by one. But now you can use u, k, h, or m to place up to 100 at a time
FIRST BUGFIX RELEASE IS UP!!!!

[editline]03:16PM[/editline]
Release notes for 0.31.02 (April 8, 2010):
Here's the first little update. Things are still settling down after the release, but it looks like I'll be able to work with the new bug tracker and handle things there day by day. There will be a few more of these small releases before I begin the SDL/Mac/Linux/40d# merge, since there are more crashes and huge problems, but I'm going to start some of the preparation for the merge as well.
Crash fix
(*) [GRAPHICS:YES] should no longer crash the arena or world generation
(*) fixed training activity crash (from removal of barracks)
(*) fixed crash from doing a large flow-style activity zone
Minor changes
(*) made zone removal still work if flows are corrected (uses rectangles)
(*) made material projectile breath happen intermittently properly
(*) corrected gorlak color
(*) made blind cave bears eyeless and gave them extravision
(*) fixed broken eyelid relationships
(*) fixed broken child names for goat/unicorn/cave swallow
(*) swapped giant caste names
(*) fixed giant cave spider bite (was blunt)
(*) fixed alligator eye text
(*) made soap bars instead of globs
(*) fixed horn silver environment
[editline]03:17PM[/editline]
Not any huge major fixes yet, but it's a start.
I don't have an option to designate the rocks.
press d->b->d that should open up a designate menu with the dump option selected.

Dwarf Fortress: Turning it up to 8 since 40d.
[del]So, I've started a new game. Mostly because of me fucking up some major stuff in the fortress design.
The dwarves of The intense hammer have been put on a quest to build a new outpost called 'Lastfortress'[/del]
Disregard that. I am so tired that I forgot to bring animals.
Gonna try and find that place again and start over.
Ok, after playing this game all day, I still can't figure out how this is fun.
I've played a lot over the past weeks anyway, but just can't see the fun! I guess it's simply not my kind of game, too complicated.
Going back to the 3D world of Minecraft was more refreshing after struggling with hot-keys and tentacle demons.
