I haven't found a place that even has goblins nearby to attack me! They need to show up on the civilizations page, right?
They need to show up on the civilizations tab on the Embark screen and they become hidden in Fortress Mode until they send a caravan or invade you.
I love the new military system. I recommend you take a look at the wiki for learning it. It explains a lot of things clearly.
It's not about it being complicated, a lot of it just isn't working as intended 100% of the time yet.
It's been 5 years and no invasions or sieges yet.
It does take some time, but how about ambushes? They usually fuck you up with that first
I thought I could substitute a locked door for a military. I was proved wrong in the next goblin siege - They brought friends. [editline]05:24PM[/editline] Uh, anyone else noticing that line breaks are removed from their posts lately?

Try making long and large drawbridges activated by a lever. IIRC they can be used to catapult those goblin and troll bastards if you can activate it while they're standing on it. Also, make about 3 mechanic's workshop with a large supply of stone nearby and make a shit ton of mechanisms out of it for traps
Oh I know how to make all sorts of defenses, I just didn't realize "troll" was on the menu for invaders. Needless to say, they swept through my fortress like a hurricane and left lots and lots of blood in their wake.

But still, that drawbridge is a must have as an early defense though
first time playing. lots of fun. can't get 3d visualizer to work...
first time playing. lots of fun. can't get 3d visualizer to work...
The new version just came out, all the 3rd party programs for DF must be remade, etc, for the new version. If you're using the old version, don't use 3Dwarf, that blows. Use Visual Fortress, it's much, much easier to use, and much better looking.
why are people having such difficulty with irrigation?
Yeah, it's not hard, it's just annoying. Most of my fortresses have been dug in stone so I'd have to irrigate anyway. [editline]09:34PM[/editline] The only bad thing about the new military menu is that I usually forget I need an arsenal dwarf. :v:
I decided to try out the newer version and I'm having problems. 1. I started out with no nobles. No expedition leader and whatnot. When can I assign some people out of the bourgeois? 2. I have tasks lined up in a woodshop and I have a woodcrafter, but he just sits in the hall with the rest of my slackers. His little labors box says nothing about crafting, only: Mining, healthcare, hauling, and other jobs. Crafting is no where under those categories. Nor is it with anyone else. I can't use the manager as I have no manager noble. What the dwarf do I do? 3. If I build a wall over a brook, will it cause a flood or will the water flow under it?
The irrigation is only annoying when the nearest source of water is halfway across the map.
The irrigation is only annoying when the nearest source of water is halfway across the map.
Engineering them successfully is rewarding. You best get digging, son.
OK, the brook/grate thing worked nicely so I'm safe from wading foes yet I keep the fish; but the matter of the other two problems remain: Nobles and labor. 1. When do the nobles show up? 2. How do I assign labor to people?
This new magma system is annoying. I'm currently in the process of making a pump stack over a hundred z-levels.
I just got a whole two migrants. Also, my dwarves seem to refuse to drag their rum to my stockpile. Wait, now they are. Nevermind.
Lost my best-new-fortress of 35 dwarves and wonderful symmetrical layout to 5 goblins in the second year because Burrows are poorly implemented pieces of shit. Lets just remove "Dwarves Can Go Outside" completely and expect Burrows to function perfectly when in reality they are a micromanagement nightmare. Good plan, Toady.

I have almost 32 dwarves and not even a leader. What the hell is going on?
I have almost 32 dwarves and not even a leader. What the hell is going on?
assign nobles, press n.
Burrows have worked perfectly for me.
Burrows work good but that only means your dwarfs won't die just like that. They will hide first and then die, because your military won't stop the attackers.
Burrows work perfectly. What are you talking about? Not to mention, if you didn't design your escape burrow to have a raising drawbridge then that's your fault. Doors won't stop the attackers. Also, your military can and will stop the attackers if they are not on the "Inactive" alert, dummy.

I'm just saying they are fucking hopeless. I ordered a squad of 15 fully equipped dwarfs to kill a horse, 3 died of thirst, one went insane. Are you telling me these twats are going to stop a siege? I'm not even mentioning the crossbowdwarfs, they stick their ammo so deep in their asses they can't shoot at all. I have reloaded and let my military to train (yes they trained I changed their schedule) then I got attacked. And guess what? 15 dwarfs in full iron can't kill 6 goblins. And yes I checked each one of them for equipment. Military is shit, that's it.
Toady fix'd some small bug "- 0000070: [General] Negative distance for building materials (Toady One) - resolved." Anyone encountered it before?
Toady fix'd some small bug "- 0000070: [General] Negative distance for building materials (Toady One) - resolved." Anyone encountered it before?
nope.

My fortress has an Axe Lord (thanks to training) and he killed a giant cave spider by himself. And then killed 3 demons when I dug to the HFS.

I've been training them since 1st wave of migrants. 2. Do you really think I was ambushed by 6 grand master speargoblins in first attack? 3. Idiot.
I had 4 grand master goblins in my first siege. :colbert:
