And Falling Sand Game might be interesting, although it's 2D. But there's a fuckload of mods to make it fun, I can spend 2 hours on it and not get bored. Try ArmA 2 demo. Great fun and if you learn some basic commands you can script stuff and attach machineguns to cows.

I own ARMA2 and hardly ever play it. There's a lot of bugs in that game and its a total pisoff to break your leg while getting out of a jeep after driving for ten minutes to the CZ
