Everyone here knows the OP meant Space Fighter shooters, hence suggestions like Freespace.
Technically, the OP DID specify these types of games too, by way of the example game he mentioned.
As for a suggestion, I would check out Tachyon: The Fringe. Decent, long, involving Space Shooter by Novalogic, and it's available on Steam!
