Even if the ending is bullshit (which I think it is), if you look into it from certain perspectives you can make it make sense.
[sp] Compare the galaxy to ecological succession, where previous plant species adjust the environment to allow successor species to then take root and take over. The reapers act as a gardener 'cutting the grass', where trimming the grass prevents the successor species (trees, bushes etc or in their case, A.I) from taking over and out competing the grass. You can also imagine a sort of I.robot scenario where the methodically cold and calculated A.I which billions of years ago was created to save organics from sythetics calculated culling civilizations every 50,000 years as the most efficient way of saving all organic life from synthetics. It doesn't make sense to the organic mind, but it would to synthetics.[/sp]
