As much as the locations on ME3 was good, I still prefer ME2 over this. It just got it right in my opinion, the interactivity, etc.

ME3 was much to linear
I always did like the feeling from ME1.
It was less of a dark and gritty future, everything looked almost utopian. It's a combination of how pristine the citadel looks, and the music... the place just felt a lot nicer.
In ME2 everything feels so used and grim, like those areas they liked to show off the the second two star wars prequels.
Everything was far too dark and gritty.

Well, ME2 mainly took place in the Terminus System, which is a lawless and shitty place

That is a fair point, but it had far more "Wham" moments than in ME1/2. To be honest most of the levels in them were a lot more forgettable (Even if the overall quality was really high)

I agree. The locations and setpieces were a lot less stale than before. ME2 still handled it quite nicely. ME1 was probably the worst in terms of staying with you, largely due to the fact that almost all of the non-story missions are in copy-pasted locations. The memorable moments in ME1 are few and far between, but in my opinion the superior RPG elements more than make up for that.
ME3 leaves a lot less to the imagination though (ignoring shit like evacuating a mercenary squad by shooting a probe), which can be taken as a good thing, I guess.
I'd also suggest that ME3's superior combat system means that they had a lot more creative control over the environments instead of having to force another maze of indistinguishable obvious-ambush-knee-high-walls around every corner, something ME2 suffered from.
