Battlemasters are some of the last Krogan with Biotics.
They're meant to be old and military commanders.

wrex was a battlemaster and he had biotic abilities
and you don't really see any other krogan with biotic abilities, so i'd have to say that wrex and other older krogan with biotic powers are vanguards
