Sauerbraten is great. It has a good map editor(co-op editing!), LAN is a breeze to set up, and it's free.

Good fun if you have patience.
And even if you want to make a map in short bursts, the editor is simple enough to understand(and it's quite clear what the buttons do) that it's possible to do so. I've been spending 20 minutes every night making a test map, just trying out all of the options, getting the lighting to look right, and trying to import new textures. The last part's not workin' out so well.
Everything is pretty simple to understand, there are many console commands, but that's expected in a map editor. It's mostly F1-F4, and the mouse controls most of the editing.

Lots of these games will fit on your USB drive.

the powder toy is an addictive game that will make you lose all awareness of reality, the problem there being: You may lose track of time and end up getting caught.
The game uses a very well made physics engine including that uses everything from plutionium to nuclear particles and provides hours of fun. Great for slow school days, plane rides, and all around lazy-day fun.
Opens and closes extremely fast, so if an administrator comes by, just click the close button, and go to the fake microsoft word document you had running in the background.

Make sure it has plenty Usb.

You are making this out better than it really is, the elements are pretty standard and dull and the best reactive element are indeed nuclear particles, but once you find out there is nothing else to make, it gets pretty boring.
there's also downloadable content, if you ask me, i gave it a pretty fair assessment
