[QUOTE=Confused111;16362655]How so?[/QUOTE]
IVAN has pure, random, unpreventable deaths at some parts of it. I remember my limbs falling off for no good reason once.
Oh this is nice, I died right after rolling a character. I"ll keep playing tomorrow, after work.

Did you eat zombies?
Don't. You'll get leprosy.
Playing with tiles removes half the fun for me :(
Also I use a very old version, stone soup feels weird.

No, I didn't.
Playing this online is awesome. I had no idea you could do this.
What did you do, then?
[editline]05:47AM[/editline]
Describe your whole adventure until you lost your limbs.

I can't do that. I don't remember that far back. Last time I played IVAN was years ago.
Well, there must've been a reason.
You might've been wearing a strange ring, or ate something bad. Maybe someone cut you and you got poisoned by some thing that makes your limbs fall off.
[editline]05:52AM[/editline]
Also, the unpredictability of IVAN is what makes it so great. It makes you not rage when you get really far.
[editline]05:52AM[/editline]
And then die.
[editline]05:52AM[/editline]
By some little Kamikaze Dwarf.
[editline]05:52AM[/editline]
Dammit.
If the whole game is in dungeons, where are the vendors? Or is there nothing like a vendor?
Can I dualwield? I would really like to have a quarterstaff on one hand and a sling on the other.
I was doing good, and then my character got hungry, and he ate Kobold chunks. They was poisoned.. :crying: He died like 2 seconds later.
Yeah, happened to me, too. Or a named Elite waited at some stairs and used his magic to pulverize me :crying:
[QUOTE=kikka;16370085]Can I dualwield? I would really like to have a quarterstaff on one hand and a sling on the other.[/QUOTE]
You can press '=' then 'i', and then you select the weapon and the hand you want to carry it in 'a' or 'b'. The [B]'[/B] button switches between hands.
The quaterstaff is a 2 handed weapon though, so you wouldn't have a b slot if equiped.
The 'Q' button will allow you to select what item to put into your quiver which can be thrown with 'f' (stones, darts, daggers etc).

If you haven't tried it, I suggest playing this game via SSH using putty, only way I play it unless I don't have a net connection. The guide in the op explains everything, apart from the fact you need to change the font encoding to C465 or whatever it is from the putty config.
Eeeh, always these overpowered named guys, killing one without a chance. That's boring and frustrating :/

Run away then
Definitely a fun little roguelike :) Going on my USB drive.
I always play a Mummy Deathknight. Or something like that.
And Mummies don't have to eat so I'll never run out of food!
EDIT: Also, holy crap I just realized 0.5.1 is a new version! AWESOME.
[I](Yes I am very ignorant.)[/I]
Troll 'zerkers are the most fun. It's not about surviving the next battle, it's about TRYING TO FIND FOOD GODDAMNIT
Also Xom is the only true god.
I like being a Naga Transmuter.

I hate Xom, he put me in a teleport loop, never stopped. Weird way to lose a game.

He's fun. When you've cleared a level of enemies and are butchering the corpses, he sends millions of spawns to help you.
When you are about to die he sends an angel of death against you.
Xom is the shit. Makhleb is ok though.
I choose to follow the Shining One, and she doesn't like it when you kill animals not aware of your presence (helpless) which fucked me over because I was an assassin.
I used to play this a lot a few years back, before Stone Soup was released. The best I got was getting to level five I think playing as a berserker (can't remember which race) before renouncing my faith and getting my ass handed to me by a whole bunch of summoned monsters.
IVAN does indeed have a lot of unavoidable deaths like stepping on landmines and whatever but the God damn combat system in that game keeps making me go back to it.
I'll try this game out later as I keep getting it recommended to me and I would find it awesome to watch my friend play through while I'm playing as well.
Definitely one of the best roguelikes out there.

Yeah IVAN is sweet. So is NetHack and ADOM. I'd just say this is the most accessible rouge-like.
Had a good little run as a Spiggan Assassin today, 1 hour play time, level 8. Not great in the grand scheme of things (a play through can take a day) but it's progress.
Gonna kill Blork the Orc just now. A special named dude. Already killed one other special named dude, had to smite him three times with my wand of fireballs (those kick major ass).
[editline]04:52PM[/editline]
Gahh, I killed Blork but died on the next level of the dungeon from an ice beast and a centaur which attacked me simultaneously.
Played this and it's pretty good fun, any particular combo's you can recommend?
Also is there a linux version for my netbook? Or will it work with wine?

Mountain Dwarf fighter is a good starter class/skill. Check the crawl wiki for info.

I believe there is a linux version. Check the sourceforge download page

Scroll to bottom and expand 0.5.1
And you can always just play the game over an SSH session.
