I've been wondering... how did the Reapers originate? I'm guessing they were doomsday devices built by a very early and very advanced race that somehow turned sentient, and then rogue. The heaviest Shepard might encounter would probably be a YMIR mech, which I like to think of as a humanoid, automated IFV.

I think it will be explained in Mass Effect 3.
