You do realise that back in the 90's, the highscore had the same purpose that achievements have today right? They were there just to increase replayability, bragging and e-peen. There were even video game tournaments to see who had the biggest highscore, and arcade shops usually would set up competitions to see who could get the biggest highscore on a certain game, all you would win would be your face plastered on the arcade's entrance and maybe some free credits.
Videogames are pointless, but they're still fun to play, and to win.
I hate people who just play/rent games for achievement points.
Usually I only feel like I achieved something is when I get something for my achievements. For example, the steam treasure hunt made trying to get achievements interesting and fun.
I only feel like I really acheived the achievement when I get one without trying to get it or even being aware of it.
Not really you don't get anything from them. I understand if getting all of them did something awesome like unlock a fifth character or give you UT style modifiers or something, but they do nothing.
Well that's not the point of achievements. They show you did something. They don't do something themselves.
Take the Man vs Tank achievement. It shows you killed a tank all by yourself, quite an impressive feat.
But of course all of this looses meaning when 4 guys go on easy and has the fourth light it on fire.
Achievements will be whored like this and then they become meaningless.
I remember playing Plants Vs. Zombies on my ipod touch for many hours after I finished the game. The achievements made me play, the achievements were more like 'complete this level without using any xx' which was pretty hard, but also pretty do able.
Most Episode 2 achievments are also great. I replayed Episode two so many goddamn times now. I find it pretty boring now that I've got all achievements.
i remember times when we used our imagination to make "achievements", like once i killed all monsters on first level of duke nukem 3d and (by cheating of course) filled entire level with tripbombs and then came to starting position and made a save. Goal is to complete level (triggering any tripbomb would destroy almost all of them and therefore you almost can't trigger one without getting killed)
Now that I think about it, another good example would be for Battlefield: Bad Company 2. You get achievements and medals and such by doing certain things or getting a certain number of points using a specific class item which encourages people to not just use one single class everytime and it probably helps balance the game too.

I remember back when we used our imagination to get ourselves off instead of porn.
They give you a reason to keep playing long after the fun has run out.
Why would you play if the fun has run out?
Achievements can go to hell. People should play the game for the game not idle for items and farm achievements like little whores. It's so much nicer for immersion if I just turn the fucking overlay off and just god damn enjoy the game without pointless little messages informing me that my dick is small and I need to be comforted.
you seem to be lingering at the "always mad" point in your life
Who needs good gameplay when you can have achievements?!
TF2 = Achievement whoring simulator 2010
Less game content, more achievements so you have something to do after you beat the 3 hour story line.
I admire achievements that are either one of the following.
A. Have a punny name (See Team Fortress 2)
B. Unlock something (Again, see Team Fortress 2)
C. Are somewhat relevant to the game itself (Like the highest point in the game or some shit)
D. References (IE Finding the movie references in Fallout NV)
E. Give an actual sense of accomplishment (An achievement 0.025% of the community has)
I like achievements when they give rewards, unlocking Stuff gives me a motivation to do stuff rather than just for a dumb badge or something.
Video game achievements serves no purpose in real life other than bragging rights and size of e-peen.
Uh? No shit?
Video games are entertainment, though they can be evocative and thought-provoking.
Ultimately though, there are very few video games that you would expect to provide you some professional development.
The primary goal of video games is to be fun and enjoyable. Some people find achievements enjoyable, some do not.
It is as pointless as any other activity which is designed to fun.
This thread is pointless.

How are you not permabanned yet? All you do is shit on threads.
they're no more pointless than the videogames themselves. whether or not videogames are pointless is up to you, though. i don't think they are.
Stuff like "Beat Chapter 1" is stupid. If you're gonna play the game, reward the player with a good game, not with points.
Stuff like "Beat Chapter 1 backwards using only a pistol" is fun, because it gives a challenge, and you wouldn't just get it for playing the game.
I would say yes and no. Achievements can be a way to lengthen a games lifespan before you get tired of it, on the other hand sometimes achievements can make you play really bad games just for them and i've seen people say they wouldn't get a game they wanted because of difficult achievements.
I find most achievements fun and entertaining to get, and they add length and challenge to game.
Plus, they make me feel warm and fuzzy inside.
I only like most achievements if I unlock an actual item or something for doing them.
