They made this off of City of Heroes?
The people who made City of Heroes are making this game, too.
So do you actually aim and press a button to attack or is it click and forget?
Well, the fighting mechanic works like this. You can always use a power at any given moment. Let's use energy blast as an example. You can activate that power and keep using it over and over, rapid blast. However, if you hold down the button, you can charge it up for more damage, and then release it, making a bigger energy blast. However, now you must wait to shoot that large blast again, while you keep blasting with the little energy beams. So, as far as I can tell, it's not like WoW where you put commands on a tab and the game does it for you. It's real-time, where you mix it up and attack what you're aiming at whenever and however you want. So, Tykoon, long story short, I'm almost certain it's the former.

They need to do something more interesting with it otherwise it's not going to work out well. I also don't think they'll capture that casual niche of MMO player like CoX had. The costume creator is fucking amazing tho.
How does i shot web [editline]06:55PM[/editline] CoH.
This is the combat in short: one, one, one, one, one, twoooooooooooo, one, one, one, one, one, twooooooooooo.
It's even less, because your endurance (fuel for other attacks) builder is an auto-attack. And thanks to Cryptic's ingenious system of letting you only have 5 powers that you can actually use at any given time (auto-attack and travel power not included), the combat ends up being more like: One, twooooooooo... wait... wait... twooooooooooo... wait... wait... twooooooooooo. Sure, you can mix it up a little. Maybe toss in a hold. Maybe you'll get held and frantically mash your F key. But all it boils down to is auto-attack, charge up your hardest hitting power, wait for more endurance while auto-attack keeps going, and use your hardest hitting power again. And maybe block when those gigantic BLOCK NOW DUMBASS messages pop up. Now that City of Heroes has power customization coming in their next update, I don't think Champions is really adding anything that City of Heroes doesn't have, or hasn't done so much better.
thanks to Cryptic's ingenious system of letting you only have 5 powers that you can actually use at any given time (auto-attack and travel power not included)
They increased it. By half. http://championsonlinedailynews.com/breaking-power-tray-doubled/
The decision has been taken to up the 7-power slot tray to 14 based on user feedback. Players do still have three different “roles”, which allow them to swap in a new tray of 14 powers. Meaning players could have 42 powers on-hand at any given time. The developers felt that he learning curve in the game is gentle enough to allow for this added complexity, and that the UI guys can implement without too many problems and without cluttering the screen. I spoke to UI lead David Murray, and he said that this change would feature in console versions of the game too. He expressed confidence that this decision is a good compromise between the input of Beta players, and the sort of daunting powers-on-screen features that can be a turn-off for non hardcore MMO players.
Also, in relation to combat, the game's endurance bar, called "Momentum", which is directly responsible for power use, is designed to prevent such a situation. Every little minor attack uses up a tiny portion of the bar, and I mean tiny. Charging powers uses up more, but not by much. They designed the system so that you'll likely never be left without power-use. So, the little attacks you do will most likely do damage and build up the EP, costing very little, if any, which is then used for your big guns.
Officially, the energy mechanic of Champions Online is called endurance. I don't like the name personally and I had a name the power bar thread and, through a consensus, we there settled on Momentum because of how the game mechanic works and to distance it from CoX mechanics. ---+-------------- |||| ---+-------------- The plus symbols represent the EP or the equilibrium point. Left of that point all energy will regenerate on its own. However, right of it has to be built through various means. Some abilities require large amounts of momentum to use while others build your momentum from use.
There's also power combination. Say you're travel power is swinging, and you're a martial artist. You can kick and shit while swinging. Or flying, where you can create a sonic boom when you take off. Enemies also have unique weakness that you can exploit through power combination. Instead of the game rolling digital dice to determine who does how much damage,or have turn based combat, this is one of the main points of Champions Online; whatever you do, it's on you. You're responsible. You attack who you want to attack, when you want to attack, how you attack. There's blocking, and grabbing (I think), and whatnot, but this is one of the key factors that makes it different from WoW, City of Heroes, Warhammer, etc.; The combat is finally in your hands.
Sounds cool. Been following this since I saw it in game informer awhile back. CANNOT WAIT. Release date?
Release date is September 1st. There is going to be an Open Beta in the middle of August. No one knows for sure if it's "open" open beta, for everyone, or open beta for those who pre-ordered.

I'm actually in the beta, and I have been since February. That's how I know what the combat is like. It isn't anything like what you described. The only way you build endurance is through very weak "endurance builder" attacks, which are auto-attacks. No other attacks build endurance. Only the very weak auto-attack does. There's probably some power balancing to do, but so far, charging up your powers does use a lot of endurance. And filling your endurance does take a while. To max, it might take anywhere from 5-8 seconds or so. There's also no grabbing, and blocking is a set number damage mitigation which is only largely used for BLOCK NOW moments, which are built in to the game. If you're trying to be smart and use it to cover your ass while moving away, you're automatically put into "sneak" mode and move at a largely reduced speed, which is currently broken, and probably supposed to act like stealth in games like WoW. You can use powers while also using a travel power, but what travel powers do is slow you down whenever you engage in combat. Every travel power has 3 "tiers" of speed that build up, or you can charge your travel power to instantly go to the max, fastest tier. When you're hit while traveling, you drop to tier 2. If you engage something with a travel power on, you drop to tier 1. So, you could try and kick while swinging, but swinging is probably the most difficult travel power to use ever, and you latch onto an invisible ceiling every time you use it, ala Spiderman 1. And there isn't a sonic boom when flying. There's something kind of like it when you charge up flight to max, or while you advance tiers while already flying, but you're not going very fast while flying. Speaking of flying, PvP balance is totally fucked up. If you can't fly, and you don't have ranged blast powers, you instantly fail and die very quickly.
Well, I guess I'm at a loss. I've only been going on information I've seen and read from videos and forums, so I'm at a disadvantage. What else can you tell us, as you're obviously not concerned about breaking the NDA.

You can compile a list of questions if you want, but I'll just toss a few things out here. I can say that on my computer, the game doesn't run well at all, and you can't achieve the visual quality shown in the promotional videos and screenshots. There isn't an ingame option for anti-aliasing, and even if there was, I doubt it would do good things for the frame rate, which is pretty shoddy already (15-20 FPS on average). A lot of textures are muddy and pretty bad as well. The tutorial is long and boring, but there's apparently going to be an option to skip it soon. After the tutorial, you're forcibly tossed in to a crisis zone of either the Desert or Canada, and you can't go anywhere else but between the two zones until you complete one of them. All in all, that does take about 5 hours or so from tutorial to completing the first zone crisis. The Desert and Canada have gone through at least 4 complete revamps over the course of beta, and it's confusing as hell, and I haven't played last week to tell you what they're like at the moment. The ones I've been playing with are rather large, but not filled with content in the sense that you can go anywhere and do whatever. It's a very guided experience. You linearly pass through the zones, advancing from one area to the next. Aside from Millennium City, each zone (all 5 of them :v:) have a crisis. Monster Island and Lemuria aren't implemented yet, but are being made to be replayable without any rewards. Speaking of items, the game uses a really weird inventory/gear system. The devs go on and on about how items can be visually represented on your character, but haven't implemented that functionality yet. And apparently the item designers are spending a lot of time making sure your RP immersion isn't broken, and are providing at least 1 alternative to every piece of gear that could be physical, with stuff like "DNA alteration" and shit. Which seems like a total waste of resources to me, when the option to turn off physical items was promised. Xbox 360 support is essentially dead, and they stopped "supporting" the controller back in March, instead focusing on nailing down keyboard controls. Nothing at all about a release date for the 360 version, or even if one exists at the time. And that's all I can think of at the moment. If you wanna post some questions here, I can answer them for you.
Jesus, it sounds like you hate the game. So adding onto your costume isn't implemented in the beta yet? Hm. What about the Nemesis system, how's that working out? Are there indoor enviroments? Like shops or building to fight in? For the throwing-objects powers, is anything and everything lift-able, or certain things are?

It's receiving a lot of industry hype and praise through the previews Cryptic's been giving out, and I have no idea why. On to questions: 1. The Nemesis system only got recently re-implemented, and I've had a bit of time to fool around with it. It starts at level 25 (out of the 40 levels). The costume creator for the Nemeses himself is the exact same as the player's. You can choose from a few pre-selected power sets for the Nemesis that are pretty vague in nature (i.e., fire blast, martial arts, ect.). The dialogue is all pre-written, and you can select from a handful of styles (mastermind, insane, and a few others) for your Nemesis to adopt. You can also choose his minions through another pre-generated list, and those were pretty expansive (ninjas, pirates, thugs, secret agents, carnies, ect.). However, there are only about 2 or 3 different minion costumes per choice. After you design your Nemesis, you go through a mission to try and stop him from breaking out of jail, which you have to fail at doing. After that's done, you get random ambushes while in zones, and each Nemesis minion that ambushes you has a chance to drop an item which hooks to the next mission where you face off against your Nemesis. It's an alright system, but the customization needs some work. Not sure if that's going to be underway any time soon. 2. Indoor areas and instances is where the game really hurts. There are a handful of indoor places in the whole game in the actual zones, and a few instances. Very few of the actual missions give out instanced content (I think I remember 2 or so), and all the instances are WoW style. You find it, you go in, there's some enemies there. There aren't any enterable buildings in Millennium City either, aside from the hidden RP dance club, Club Caprice. 3. Throwing objects is handled through the strength stat. The more strength you have, the more melee damage you do, and you can lift heavier stuff. You can't pick up everything, and the range of throwable objects isn't exactly varied, but there is a healthy amount of stuff around.

Do you know anything about the servers? Such as, will there be servers in Oceania? And if not, is this game playable with pings of around 200-310? Also, who is your character, and: Do any of these fucking female heroes wear full fledge PANTS instead of g-strings and weird swimsuit-armour? Example: I rated this character 4 stars not just because I like the style, but because he legs aren't visible up to her camel toe. Lol, I just knocked Captain Aussie off the top by voting Witchdoctor 5 stars. :v:

Eww. Universal server? That's code for "shit ping if you don't live in the U.S.A"
I heard that there was going to be one universal server, but clarification would be nice.
Yes. Along with non-unique names, meaning, two characters can have the same name. They're differentiated by a global name (shared amongst all your characters), which is prefixed with an "@" sign. EX: dudeman@tacotime.
People can have the same name as other people? That's disappointing.
Also goddamn, I stay so careful all this time and you just go and break the NDA like that.
Haha, Well NDAs are of course important because of un-finished features and the such. But base info leaking out isn't bad at all. As well as pointing out the faults of an obviously faulty game. On top of that, the FAGGOTS WHO REPORT NDA BREAKS ON THE OFFICIAL BETA FORUMS ARE JUST SMUG DICKS TRYING TO FEED THEIR WHITE KNIGHT EGOS. Because a little NDA leak to tell people about it doesn't really hurt anything. It's a different thing if a dev catches you though. If Abe wants to post his opinion that's his business, he isn't posting screens or videos. Seeing this kind of shit really pisses me off, especially when I catch it in this underhanded form. but you wouldn't know anything about that right?
