I think it's because today's game have a bigger focus on telling a story, and nothing breaks the flow better than being stuck at the same place for 2 hours. Games are slowly becoming more and more like movies, in contrast to old games where the goal was to get from A to B. I do often crave for hard games though, and I notice way too often that a game's hardest difficulty is actually easy. Compare MW2's Veteran to Contra for example.
I still have Contra, and it's really not that hard.
Oh and fuck the race level in Mafia. That level made my blood boil. All racing levels in non racing games do (fuck you gtas except gta4 which actually is okay)
I miss genuinely challenging games. It seems as the only challenging games left are the less mainstream games or modes where it's so hard it's bullshit.
This is one of the reasons why I like Dark Messiah. :3
I still have Contra, and it's really not that hard.
okay, Ninja Gaiden then
Older games (SNES era and older) had less content so they had to keep you in a place for a longer amount of time to drag out the amout of time spent playing.
Ah this thread is gold.
Everyone here needs to go play Demon's Souls.
The main reason behind this is the "halofication" of the heath system. About to die? Just jump behind a random corner/car/fence/sofa/pregnant woman and watch those wounds regenerate like motherfucking Wolverine.
I totally agree :c I beat a full game in a time span between 1-2 days
I fucking hate hard games, especially the ones where you only get 3 lives and no saves. So much games were left unfinished only because you ran out of lives. And without regenerating health you would die almost after every firefight in games where you can get killed rather fast. Optional difficulty is fine, but don't force it on me. I want to complete the game and enjoy it, not sit hours on one spot dying.
I don't like hard single player games. I want to immerse myself into the story, but then some fucking impossible challenge ruins it. But I don't like piss easy games either.
I fucking hate hard games, especially the ones where you only get 3 lives and no saves. So much games were left unfinished only because you ran out of lives.
This is (or rather, was) an inherited flaw brought around by the early arcade games. By imposing a finite amount of times the player could play the game they obviously forced people to stuff their change into their machines. After home consoles it became a moot point, but games often had a life system in place simply because "you have to have a certain number of lives". After infinite continues became a standard this too was dropped. (Though some italian plumbers still fail to realize this)
And without regenerating health you would die almost after every firefight in games where you can get killed rather fast.
Half-Life 2 didn't have regenerating health and it wasn't really that difficult. By implementing regenerating health the developers lazily skip over health kit placement and tend to turn the game bland. In my opinion regeneration should be left for the easier difficulties.
Optional difficulty is fine, but don't force it on me. I want to complete the game and enjoy it, not sit hours on one spot dying.
Hence why most games have a casual option. Sadly the harder options are still riddled with flaws and are hard for all the wrong reasons (if any). Most companies just think hard = more stronger enemies.
There should be at least some way to get health back. Other than dying. If you're in a game, you come across someone and kill them, you might have low health. That gives you a disadvantage the next time you're in a fight. Either way, when a game is too hard and you get stuck, as you've said you end up doing the same thing over and over in the hope of getting it right that time. That's not fun, that's frustration. Frustration is un-fun. I don't think a game has to put you in that position to be "challenging".
I agree with the whole disadvantage but I like it. The way to get back health through running over medpacks can get a bit annoying but it makes it fun for me sometimes. Makes me think a bit more before going running straight into a fight without checking for advantages for me first.
This Half life 1 is by one of the hardest games I've ever played and I doubt any of my friends could beat it besides the fact that they use consoles, the only exception to this is Goldeneye rogue agent which is fucking impossible

You're all blinded by nostalgia. Repeating the same thing about 50 times is not challenge. That's just pure bullshit. Games should be hard, but not completely fucking impossible.
Just Cause 2 was kind of hard. I would get my ass kicked 50% of the time if I ran in somewhere acting like Rambo. Though the other 50% I felt like Rambo. But the bosses were easy shit. [sp]I killed the ninjas by just throwing a remote charge, and the fight with baby was piss easy because I had saved the rocket launcher from a previous mission.[/sp]
There's bullshit hard as in the game just makes stuff do a shitload of damage to you and aimbots on you and not really doing anything but giving a false impression on how long a game lasts. Then there's the difficulty demon's souls achieves, it doesn't scream bullshit at you and feels just right. Yeah sure, the game is a walk in the park after spending over a 100 hours on it and being on Newgame +7 on one character and on atleast the 2nd playthrough on the others but that's because I've got better. With some games having a bullshit difficulty that feels like you're just being cheated, they can fuck off.
Play Dragon age: origins. I swear to God even on normal you'll die once at every boss fight and on hard you have to do your absolute best. And even though I don't really like the concept of regenrating health, it's better than the whole "get stuck at some point with 5 HP left and get screwed over because it's impossible not to get shot." So what's the best course of action? some 50-50 system, with 50% health that gets healed and 50% regenerating health (shields). (not exactly 50-50 balance, but you catch my drift.)

Works well tbh.
Back when I was younger, Super Mario 64 was bullshit hard. Now it's bullshit easy. Hm.
The difficulty is fucked up in most games, look at the difference between Normal and Legendary in Halo, its either too easy or fucking impossible.

I swear I spent like 30 minutes outside of a boss room making sure all my characters had everything they needed and carefully choosing their buffs and once I started the fight I literally paused every half a second to give all my characters orders. Needless to say I got my ass kicked.
You're all blinded by nostalgia. Repeating the same thing about 50 times is not challenge. That's just pure bullshit. That's the stigma killing the industry for people like us. That we're "blinded by nostalgia". Just because we happen to think older games were made with better gameplay mechanics, it does not make us suddenly the retards on our block. And to all of you complaining about the non-regenerating health, get the fuck over it and stop running pell mell into every encounter. Take your time, and ration out your health with caution and skill. I'm not saying I dislike games like Halo, but I'm saying that don't expect to play games not like them and then breeze through them. You won't.
ME2 + Insanity + Biotic = Holy fuckshit
I like challenging games, but there's a difference between hard and unfair. Running through a death course without getting hit? Hard. Fighting a giant boss in a tiny room where getting hit once pretty much kills you and then you have to restart the entire level? Unfair. Looking at you Megaman.
This era and generation is about instant gratification. If something doesn't have an instant reward people don't want to sit through it. It's sad, really, how people have devolved into such simple mindsets.
Games now-a-days give you too many chances. "Aw, you got a bullet in your head? Just wait here for a moment and regain your HP." Like, what the fuck is the point of Medics in most games anymore?!
