I rated myself optimistic.
At this point, it wouldn't surprise me if Valve abandons Episode 3 and just focuses on Half-Life 3. I think they realized episodic just doesn't work that well with Half-Life. It would explain why they haven't made or talked about any other episodic games, and why they've been so quiet about HL in general.
That said, I'm not gonna get my hopes up about HL3 being revealed in this magazine.

Does anyone honestly care about Episode 3/Half Life 3 anymore? We've been treated to TF2, L4D's, Portal's, Valve has kinda gone off and started a whole new cycle. I'd rather play something like Mass Effect 3 or hell even Brink before Episode 3. Just not a big deal anymore.

I'd take Half Life 3 over TF2 or L4D any day. Portal 2 is a toss up.

All in all though, VALVe said there'd be three big surprises in the next ... 8 months is it now? maybe it's reasonable they'll announce something this early. If it's Half Life, I don't know.

I've been saying this for the past 2 E3s.
Makes sense that something about half life 3 (or episode 3) would be coming early next year. They'll have just gotten portal 2 out of the way, and they'll be able to get the other half of their fans psyched up for something new. And then delay it for a year.

I hope this silence is not because Valve started focusing on other games because they got bored of their flagship and it's instead either because the developers overthrow their concepts over and over and over again because they're sure they can do better than perfect or because they don't want to take away any of the mystery, surprise and horror.
I have to say when I'm looking forward to something I want as much info as possible on it and I take every new bit of information with gratitude, but on the other hand it also leaves me with fewer surprises and twists when actually playing the game. Half-Life 2 was a very good game and still is superior to some contemporary games in some aspects, but many things have become standard a long time ago, too. And the seesaw puzzles are getting reeeaaally old as well as the same Zombie Clone Army (because they all look the same, not because they're actually cloned) and the same weapons over and over again.
I hope Episode 3 takes so long because Valve realized that and wants to blow our minds with innovation.
If anyone can do that, it's Valve for me.

I highly doubt they'd do it at E3. E3 is very heavily console focused, and Half-Life has never been too big as a console franchise.

What? EP3 means episode 3, referring to the next half life installment, not E3. Maybe it's just your wording that confused me.
Stop with the HL3, EP3 is the end of Gordons Story arc, there will be no EP3.
