Ive checked all the jar files and .minecraft files.
Unless notch coded a texture, which I doubt, its pigmen or a generated thing.
Although, notch did say he might add herobrine in the future long ago... Maybe he did...

Thats a bit common though.
It isn't a mob, type of weather, block, or item. If it was we'd see the skin files in the game's folders.

I'm putting money on a "christmas tree". A tall tree, leaves in the shape of a pine tree with diamond, gold and iron blocks as decorations. Redstone lights too.

I wouldn't say that's rare. I threw 16 eggs, got 4 chickens from it. So maybe a 1/4 chance per egg.
