I don't exactly know what you're building, but you don't have to make glass expensive.
Make a few glass blocks (lets say you make three) and make windows like this
cobble glass cobble cobble glass cobble cobble cobble glass cobble
Now you have a wall that used three cobblestone to make a ten block wide wall, that you can see out of and see everything around you.
