Just figure out how to do it based on what Notch posted, then wait until he releases the redstone instrument blocks.
Then you can just stick some there and you'll have the first not-incredibly-simple sound thingy!

Why would anyone pay for the beta [I]and[/I] the retail version?
I kind of want to buy it for my friend but I'm not sure if I should wait until it's out of beta.

You've got it all wrong, you'll get everything up to [b]and including[/b] the retail version with a beta account, along with all bugfix patches and probably a large amount of small content patches after the release.
Alpha accounts won't have to pay for any new DLC or such, ever, though. Notch promised so, and he's a man of his word.
Also, the DLC will probably come a long time after the release, once everyone has the game and Notch stops making money just selling it for 20€.(It'll go up to that on release)
