When i had to choose whether to Save Ashley or Kaidan in Virmire in Mass Effect.
A majority of Psychonauts. This is an old game, but I'll spoiler tag it anyway if anyone don't want it spoiled:
[sp]Psychonauts seems like a fun and colorful game, but when you look a bit deeper it is really sad. The first really sad thing you encounter is the hidden room in Milla's brain. If you haven't played Psychonauts, then do it now! But the premise is that you are a psychic kid going to a psychic summer camp, where you learn to use your abilities. So you enter the minds of the camp leaders, who are also members of the psychic police of sorts, and learn abilities in their minds. In there you will find Emotional Baggage, cobwebs covering forgotten memories and vaults. The vaults contain memories they want to keep hidden. You can open those vaults. In a hidden part of her mind, which is a big dance-party by the way, you find a vault and a big chest. She tells you not to bother with that, and to keep out of the chest. For your own sake. What you find is this:[/sp] I cannot add urls in spoilers, ignore this if you don't want part of Psychonauts spoiled for you.[sp]Up to that point the game had been all fun and games, so it hit especially hard. After that you start entering the minds of people with different kinds of psychological disorders. So much sadness. But it is all hidden beneath a layer of funny dialogue, a great story and brilliantly realized levels.
Damn, I'll probably get tl;dr on this, but I feel I had to type down all that.[/sp]
When I played the uninvited and found out that nice lady was not nice
Not so much emotional like weepy as it was emotional scary:
When I first played the original Half-Life when I was 10 or 11. I thought it was pretty cool, walking around a giant lab with scientist guys walking around; the resonance cascade was pretty cool looking. So I'm walking out of the lab and the first thing I see after getting the crowbar are these headcrab zombies, and it scared the shit out of me then.
I remember playing HL1 co-op with my brother on the PS2 and I had this uncontrollable anxiety when playing FPS games when I was younger. I shivered uncontrollably all the time and the headcrabs scared the shit out of me.
And it wasn't just HL1, any FPS game scared gave me anxiety because I couldn't see what was going on behind me. I also remember Operation Desert Storm on the ps2 and I had the same problem.
Grand Theft Auto IV. This game is a work of art. I've never been so attached to the main and supporting characters.
I got so connected to Niko and his friends, especially Little Jacob and Packie. And whatever ending you choose, you get your revenge.
But you still have a feeling of emptiness, as Niko has nothing left.
[sp]I felt really bad for Packie when Kate dies, but also for Niko, she was sort of a symbol of peace for him.[/sp]
I felt really really bad for Packie.
Fallout New Vegas at Camp Forgotten Hope or whatever it was called. Reading the letters that the soldiers wrote combined with the weather was so sad.
I just walked in with a stealthsuit, took out my fatman from the boomers which i had shamelessly murdered, killed the power armoured NCR, then i stuck a timebomb at the feet of 1st recon, which i had crafted using the loot of more of my victims in Goodsprings, i then picked up the minigun off the corpse of a NCR heavy trooper, which i used to kill the other 3/4 of the camp, just before i took out my anti material rifle and blew the brains out of the veteran combat rangers.
What?
Fucking Nova in Fallout 3.
World in Conflict:
[sp]The characters and story of this game were really well done. You felt personally connected with the people even though it was an RTS. In particular Bannon; his story was the best. From the very start, he's established as an incompetant coward who always tries to blame you for his mistakes. You grow to find him incredibly annoying, especially the way he always tries to handle everything himself then screws it up. Then there's the scene where he accidentally orders his troops to fire on civilians. Kudos to the voice actor; you can really here in his voice that he realises how badly he's fucked up. And then in the end, when he atones for it by sacrificing himself to call in the nuke. Great stuff, and great game.[/sp]

The first time i finished Red was pretty emotional. Going all that way with the pokemon you have trained, and become friends with, to achieve goals.
Unless you used pokemon for cloning.
I get really nostalgic listening to this.

All the bad endings to Stalker SoC
All the bad endings to Stalker SoC

Having said that, the 'rich' and 'disappear' endings were the worst! I really was like 'oh come on, is this dude a sadist or something'?
Motherfuckin' Eli Vance, the closest I was to shedding a tear over a video game :saddowns:
There was also one of the deaths of one of your squadmates in Call Of Duty 3, Dixon I think that was quite sad. Emotional besides sadness there was the ending to Metro 2033, when you're slow mo running to the edge of the tower and look out over the ruined city. Similar feelings to that were in Oblivion and Fallout 3, when you exit the training areas and your characters eyes melt from sunlight. Then the Half Life 2 and Episodes just altogether, they just stuck there in my head as beautifully crafted pieces of media, the story they told and the story you make up yourself along the way like in that quote in the OP.
I saw this thread, and even though I'm months late, here's a sad story.
[sp] In Fallout 3 Operation:Anchorage addon, you find a few holotapes of a guy surviving the first assaults on Anchorage, and he says how he tried to pass his friend a clip of ammo, and a mortar shell hit and killed his friend before his eyes, and how he goes into detail on how pieces of his friend are still splattered on his uniform, a permanent reminder of his friend's death. As he goes on, he tells his girlfriend how he wants to go home, he doesn't want to fight, and he's just scared for his life, and how much he misses her and only wants to be with her. [/sp]
[sp]Fallout 3: The Death of James. it was very sad. the last few moments you see him.
The Death of Liberty Prime
Portal 2: When Wheatly was lost in space
The Death Of Cave Johnson
When GLaDOS lets you go
the ending song.[/sp]

Hurr durr how are we supposed to know what game if you cover it all up.
Also I know the threads old.
The Neverhood was the only singleplayer game that really made me laugh, still makes me laugh, I remember trying to play it often when I was little but kept getting stuck at puzzles.
And then my friend who borrowed it moved :smith:
That bit from The Darkness [sp]where jenny is shot. It was at that point that it turned the whole game tale upside down - you don't have to rescue the girl. You have to avenge her - no happy endings[/sp]
Made the ending all the sweeter as well.
Very underrated game IMO, had lots of moments that made you think and had a very realistic way of telling the story.
That part really got me emotionally, more than any other movie or game.
[sp]John Marston's death[/sp] in Red Dead Redemption.
I shed a tear.
Ok fine I'll be honest I bawled.
Knowing that [sp]John's attempt redeem himself and ensure a better life for his family was in vain made it even worse.[/sp]

End of Bastion.

Final Mission, "Delenda Est",[sp]You're at the end of a chain of victories and missions that were meant to starve the invading GTVA forces of valuable ships and supplies to make their final offensive as weak as possible. You chased down the Carthage, an Orion class destroyer, last mission and forced the commander to crash jump out of the area. Her vector showed that her jump had clipped Saturn's gravitational field and it stopped her drive dead, leaving her wide open for a final assault. You all jump in, and as the first wave of defending corvettes approaches and charges forward beams, your AWACS ship engages its ECM, and the aim of the beams is skewed, allowing your frigates to slam the ships into retreat. You repeat this with every wave of ships that approaches, and eventually the entire escort fleet of the Carthage is destroyed. Surrounded, your fleet gives the Carthage's commanding officer one last chance to surrender... but before she can respond, you get an urgent message from the AWACS ship.
"Wait... no thats impossible! We're detecting a TAG beacon on our hull, the Carthage's beams have locked on!"
"JAM THAT SIGNAL! JAM IT NOW!"
But its all too late, a cannon on the Carthage's flank glows, and spears the AWACS ship, gutting it instantly. The fleet commander gives the order to open fire with all guns and you all try desperately to destroy the Carthage, but before you can even get really started, 4 jump signatures are detected as fleet destroyer, the Imperious, and its escort corvettes jump in on a direct vector towards your fleet. Its now hopeless, completely hopeless. Fleet command gives the order to retreat, and 2 of the 4 frigates turn away. The other 2 charge the Imperious in an attempt to hold the advancing fleet off so their allies could escape. The first frigate is gutted and tossed aside before the fighters even get in range. The other attempts to broadcast a surrender IFF to distract them long enough for a ram, but its no use. The radio channel remains open as the meson beams tear right through the lone frigate.
"AUTOMATED DISTRESS ALERT: INTERNAL TEMPERATURE EXCEEDS 25,000F. DEPLOYING DISASTER BEACON" is heard over the comm as the frigate goes up in flames, The last 2 frigates and your wing are in a full retreat now, with fighters and bombers tailing close behind. Just as you are about to jump out, the drive pressure on one of the frigates drops to nothing, her engine is shot and she can no longer jump. She turns around to face the enemy as 4 full squadrons of strike bombers jump in at long range and begin closing in. Your frigate gives the order to dock NOW, they are going to crash jump and they don't want anybody to be left behind... You land as the bombers begin launching torpedoes and your frigate jumps out... leaving the last frigate to the fire of the enemy... the camera begins to zoom out as more torpedoes are fired, and as the beams from the Imperious spear the last frigate... the camera fades to black. [/sp]
EDIT:
To be honest, the entire campaign was incredibly emotional. It currently lacks voice acting, but this has been in the works for some time. It employs excellent music, stunning visuals, and a fantastic storyline.
Jenny(The Darkness) [sp] dying in front of you and you cant do anything about it. [/sp]
Endings like in fallout 3 when they sum up what you did. And you're looking back and go "good times"
But for Fallout 3 though, I was an evil scumbag throughout the whole game on one save and that narrator made me feel bad.
Stalker would make you depressed.

Oh, and lets not forget Call Of Juarez. Ray's voice acting and storytelling was just damn good made, it was kind of touching when he told how he got that bible.
Stalker: COP. Had Zulu die in the tunnel and then I was the only one who made it too the evacuation point. I got pretty attached to everyone, too :smith:. Also, the "swamp icebreaker" was over run by bandits and basically killed everyone.
Homeworld 1. Which parts? See for yourself.

Okay, moments in games.
In Fallout 3, Underworld. So many people singled out for their mutation/race (no idea what ghoul falls under) managing to finally live somewhere in peace without harrassment by bigots.
Same goes for Jacobstown in NV.
In CoD 4 when you spend all that fucking effort saving the chopper pilot and you get in the helicopter ready to leave and then a fucking nuke goes off.
Portal 2.
I always felt sad when I detonated the LTB in C&C 3. All those GDI units, lost in a supermassive explosion.
Leaving the vault from Fallout 3. It wasn't that emotional, but it was an amazing moment.
