I've always thought of so much shit that could be added to Steam that will never actually be added.
Like, for example, custom statuses.
Real ID like used in battle.net is kind of cool if you ask me.
This is awesome too.
Custom statuses would be nice as well.

Yup.
"Namehere is now playing non steam game hl2 epidose 311!11!"
This would help because every year I have to delete 30 friends from my friend list because I don't remember them. Damn bastards changing names so often!
This idea is great for when you have friends who change their names a lot. (Like I do) I support this idea.
My friends end up removing me for not talking, but beforehand they change their name to something completely random and I'm so used to having them in one spot on my list so I can't find them.
Excellent idea.
Sounds awesome. I like being able to track my who my friends are, namely when we swap names during games of TF2 to confuse other people.
I also like the concept of the Real ID system from Battle.net.

Custom statuses would be useful, like "Idling", "Downloading stuff", "Busy", "Guest", etc.
Just like in messenger, you could add/change to nickname.

uh most of the time i even see this function being used is for "sleeping" or "watching tv" or just general non-steam games
i don't see anyone imitating fake games these days, or anticipated games
Sounds like a great idea - you should fly straight to steam offices and pitch it!
Having 246 friends, this would help, so I know who to remove and who not to remove.
Reminds me of how you can change the name of any non-Steam game. Well, minus the part where you confuse the shit out of your friends, but I like it regardless.
This base functionality already exists in Steam.
However, there are no UI elements implemented for it.
http://tracker.limetech.org/projects/osw/repository/entry/Open%20Steamworks/IClientFriends.h#L56
[cpp]
virtual void SetFriendAlias( CSteamID steamIDFriend, const char *pchAlias ) = 0;
[/cpp]
If I find enough time I may make a utility which allows this sort of thing.
Sorry if I abuse this thread, but I ahd an idea too. I'd really like to categorize friends. Just like the games library. So that you cann put people in special categories.
Lol, Chrisaster pointed me to this thread, I already use OpenSteamWorks and the function Voided posted for ~3 months now. I just need to find a way to implement it into the UI :D
Would be handy, just like in MSN.
So I started work on that utility I mentioned, and this is what I got so far: http://screencast.com/t/GeJRExCVKW
If this is implemented I shall nickname Dachande the fucker who keeps changing his name.
